šŸ“South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

Proclaimed in 1972, South Luangwa is a dream destination for wildlife lovers. Known for its incredible walking and canoe safaris, it also boasts one of the highest densities of leopards.

From September to October, you can witness thousands of Carmine Bee-Eaters nesting along the banks of the Luangwa River, while night drives give you a chance to explore the park after darkā€”one of the few parks where you can do this!

The dry season (July to September) offers the best game viewing, though it is peak season. If you prefer a quieter experience, the "Emerald Season" (November to April) is full of migrant birds and newborns. For great value, May and June are ideal!

Makgadikgadi Salt Pans - Africa's White Desert

Covering over 12,000 square kilometres, the Makgadikgadi Pan in north-eastern Botswana is one of the world's largest salt flats.

Once an ancient lake, this mesmerising white desert landscape comes alive during rainy season, when large flocks of flamingos arrive, as well as herds of zebra and wildebeest.

It's also a top spot for stargazing and adventure activities, like quad biking.

Baobab ā€“ The 6,000-year-old "trees".

The baobab, also known as the ā€œtree of lifeā€, can live for more than 6,000 years and can store up to 32,000 litres of water in its trunk. While commonly called trees, baobabs are technically not true trees. They belong to the Adansonia genus and are classified as ā€œsucculentā€ plants.

Baobabs have a distinctive appearance, often referred to as ā€œupside-down treesā€ due to their large, spreading branches that look like roots. They can primarily be found across sub-Saharan Africa, but they also grow in other regions with similar climates.

Did you know that the Okavango River never reaches the sea? šŸŒŠ

Instead, its waters flow into the Kalahari Desert, creating a stunning oasis. This unique natural wonder in Botswana, spans 15,000 square kilometres during the annual floods, transforming into a vast inland paradise teeming with wildlife.

The delta is home to over 1,000 plant species, 400 bird species, and 150 mammals, including the Big Five. It's one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, attracting nature lovers from around the world.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Okavango Delta plays a crucial role in climate regulation, acting as a carbon sink. Its seasonal flooding supports a rich and diverse ecosystem, making it a sought-after destination for unforgettable safaris and mokoro boat rides.

šŸ“Bo-Kaap, Cape Town

A captivating colourful neighbourhood with a rich history, framed by Table Mountainā€™s majestic backdrop.

Formerly the Malay Quarter, the colourful buildings are an attribute to a historic law, when houses leased to slaves had to be white. The rule was eventually lifted and those in slavery could buy the properties, painting them bright colours as an expression of their freedom.

Truly a beautiful and inspiring location to visit.

šŸ“Robben Island, Cape Town

Just off the coast of Cape Town lies Robben Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site steeped in history and significance. Once a place of isolation for political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, the island now stands as a powerful symbol of South Africaā€™s journey to democracy.

Visitors can explore the prison where Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in captivity, hear personal stories from former inmates, and reflect on the resilience and courage that shaped a nation. A trip to Robben Island is more than a visitā€”itā€™s a deeply moving experience that connects you to a pivotal chapter in history.

Every few years, after just the right amount of rainfall, the usually dry Sandhof Farm near Maltahƶhe transforms into a sea of pink and white as thousands of Sandhof lilies bloom. This natural spectacle lasts only a few days, drawing visitors and photographers eager to witness the magic.

The lilies, unique to Namibia, thrive in the farmā€™s clay-rich soil, making this rare phenomenon even more special. If youā€™re lucky enough to catch this breathtaking display, itā€™s an experience youā€™ll never forget!

Donā€™t drink the water! šŸ˜® (Unless youā€™re a flamingošŸ¦©)

The waters of Lake Natron, in Northern Tanzania, are highly alkaline, having leached through volcanic material from nearby Mt. Ol Doinyo Lengai. Topped up by geothermal springs, they are also hot, often over 40ĀŗC!

These extreme conditions foster the growth of cyanobacteria, harmful to most animals. Yet, this seemingly inhospitable environment is a lifeline for one iconic species - the lesser flamingo. In fact, Lake Natron serves as the largest breeding ground in the world for these stunning birds, providing a vital sanctuary for their survival.

Adding to its otherworldly intrigue, parts of Lake Natron turn a vivid red due to algae that thrive in the hypersaline environment. This striking colour is sometimes even visible from space!

Have you seen Tanzaniaā€™s ā€˜Deadly Red Lakeā€™? Or its flamingo-filled shores?

šŸ¾The African Leopard

Wild leopards roam a diverse range of habitats across Sub-Saharan Africa, from dense forests to arid savannahs, and are among the continent's most fascinating and elusive big cats.

Known for their incredible stealth and strength, these skilled hunters can take down prey much larger than themselves. In a display of their agility, they often haul their catch into the treetops to keep it safe from scavengers.

We think leopards are one of the most stunning big cats out there! šŸ˜ Have you ever been lucky enough to spot one in the wild?

Penguin party! šŸ§šŸ§

Looking for a unique day out from Cape Town? Head to Boulders Beach, in Simon's Town on the Cape Peninsular, where you can swim with African penguins!

If you donā€™t want to get wet (the water is pretty cold!) you can still get a great view of these charismatic creatures basking in the sunshine, waddling along the shore and diving into the waves from the boardwalks at the adjacent Foxy Beach.

The colony is over 2000-strong, with the birds most active early in the morning and late in the afternoon.
