St George’s Gardens this afternoon, no filter needed. Looking the very picture of tranquillity today, in 1715 it was one of the first cemeteries (some say the first one) to be built away from a church in London. Unpopular at first due to the increased risk of body snatching, it became overpopulated like all inner London graveyards and was transformed into an ‘outdoor sitting room for the poor’ by the philanthropic Kyrle Society in 1885. There are lots of haunting stories to be unearthed here, so why not join our guided walk of the gardens on the 3rd and 15th February? Booking link in bio.

A guided tour of the splendid Theatre Royal Drury Lane in Covent Garden to round off the year! It is a really spectacular place after a £60 million facelift. Did you know that it is the world’s oldest theatre site in continuous use? And the only theatre with two Royal boxes? George III didn’t get on with his son, the wayward Prince Regent, so to avoid confrontation they had two different entrances and sides of the theatre.

Among the many treasures and oddities I discovered yesterday in St Bartholomew the Great Church in Smithfield, there was this gravestone. Mr Jonathan Thornell was obviously very wealthy and very proud of his profession as hair merchant. Wigs were very much in vogue during the Georgian era and remained fashionable until the introduction of the hair powder tax at the end of the 18th century, an ingenious way for the government of the day to replenish the empty coffers.

Thanks for organising the visit.

Join us on a walk on The Dark Side of the Bloom on Sunday April 30th.

If there is any truth in the theory that certain places can be charged with the energy, personalities and violent emotions of those who have lived and died there, then Bloomsbury and Holborn have an abundance of locations where the barriers between the past and the present, the living and the dead, are just a little thinner than elsewhere.

Join us in walking these shadowy streets, and hear the stories of haunted hospitals, uncanny universities and scandalous societies, all located amongst the elegant Georgian terraces of Bloomsbury. We will uncover long forgotten ghost stations and atmospheric pubs, before moving on through the leafy, lugubrious squares of Holborn.

Spring has sprung on the facade of the Granary Building in King’s Cross (just ignore the moody sky…). These three colourful draperies are part of the installation Fabulae Naturae by Lucy Orta, drawing attention to the wonder of wildlife and the loss of species our planet faces. You can see it until April 29th.
