Top Tips for getting better at descending… from one of the best ultra running coaches in the industry

Without over complicating it- It’s pretty simple really, practice, practice and practice.
Repetition, repetition, repetition.

We tend to avoid things that are hard, or things that we aren’t very good at or we don’t enjoy.

So if you’re not very good at descending, especially technical descending, the chances are you’re probably avoiding it!

Dedicate a specific session or a few sessions a week to practicing descending.

Confidence is the biggest factor- without the confidence you’re going to hold back, so the only way you’re going to build confidence is by practicing and repetition.

If your confidence is low, start with an easy technical descent that’s not very steep that doesn’t have high consequences if you do take a fall! Then over time increase the difficulty.

Another factor is skill, descending is a skill, so to increase the skill you need to practice. But without the confidence, it’ll be hard to train the skill. So work on these 2 areas firstly.

Other things you can work on to help:

Specific S&C 💪🏻💪🏻 and maybe go for an eye test and check your vision is as good as it can be ie do you need visual aids such as glasses or contact lenses 👀

Your eyes relay information back to the brain that allow you to make split second decisions, so if you have sub par vision this is going to slow your reaction times down which will result in you being a slower descender…or you’ll have an accident and trip/fall/roll an ankle, which will knock your confidence etc etc etc.

There’s also an element of common sense too, like don’t attempt to practice descending down a really steep wet grassy boggy descent in road shoes or trail shoes with no grip 😃 You want appropriate footwear for the task at hand.

A simple session you could do is:

Warm up 15mins
5mins Easy hike up a tricky descent
2mins Down fast
Repeat x5
Cool down 10mins

You could also simply factor in some tricky descents into your long run and take the descents with mean and intent.

Good Morning!

For many, Sunday mornings signify a hangover and a well-deserved lie-in. We wish we could say the same a lot of unpacking, planking and cleaning!

Reflecting on yesterday, we had a splendid day with all of you. It’s been wonderful to gather so many fantastic individuals for a race, filled with cheerful spirits and emotional moments at the finish line. A heartfelt thank you to each of you!

Regarding the route, I opted to leave the old markers in place to help participants who missed a turn find their way back. Unfortunately, this led to some confusion, compounded by the fact that the GPX file on the White Rose Ultra website had not been updated. Some accessed older versions of the route, despite our attempts to share the correct links. I apologise for this oversight, and we will ensure it is addressed in future events. Additionally, we acknowledge that some markers were missing, including at least one that disappeared on the morning of the event. We are even more committed to providing a well-marked route moving forward.

We also received some negative feedback from a couple of horse owners along the route who expressed concerns about runners being perceived as ‘wild’ on their land, which frightened their horses. We are looking into this and considering possible rerouting. Please remember to close any gates you encounter, as leaving them open could lead to misunderstandings. Although we strive to be responsible, previous visitors dog walkers etc may sometimes be the cause of these issues.

Looking ahead, please mark your calendars for WRU 2025 on Saturday, November 1st! Entries will open later today in approximately six hours, with only 100 places available. As you know, we sold out this year and had to offer free deferrals. We do not maintain a waiting list for the WRU30, so if you don’t sign up, you will miss out!

This year, we had:
- Total available places: 60
- Participants signed up: 73
- Deferred entries: 12
- Did Not Start (DNS): 14
- Did Not Finish (DNF): 2
- Finishers: 45

For 2025, we will open 110 places and offer 10 free deferrals the week prior to the event.

We would love to hear your stories and see your photographs, so please share them with us! Tag or when posting.

Thank you for joining us this year. Enjoy your recovery, and we look forward to seeing you in 2025!
