Introducing you to some of the hardest workers on our farm, our wonderful Westerlands bees.
This last weekend was World Bee Day, celebrated on May 20th to honour the birth of Anton Janša, a pioneer beekeeper born in 1734.
The day aims to raise awareness about the vital role of bees and other pollinators in our ecosystem. They play a crucial role in pollinating plants, ensuring biodiversity and food production. However, these pollinators face challenges like habitat loss, climate change, and pesticides.
Protecting the environment and supporting our ecosystem in a sustainable way, while encouraging regeneration are values we embrace at Westerlands and we view our bees as a measure of how successful we are in achieving these goals.
World Bee Day promotes initiatives to protect pollinators, conserve their habitats, and educate people about their significance.
We love the wild garlic growing season. Now we can look forward to Pam’s legendary wild garlic pesto!
With its fresh, garlicky smell wild garlic (Allium ursinum) is an unmistakable scent in woodlands and forests in the spring months. Preferring to grow in shady and damp conditions in woodlands and forests, the wild garlic season starts in late winter and lasts until the end of spring, although it may be past its best by then.
Wild garlic can even be frozen to preserve its freshness and nutrients. Simply, wash and dry and place in a freezer bag and freeze. Another benefit freezing wild garlic this is you can cook with wild garlic out of season.
Do you have any tips, or favourite recipes, on how to use this wonderful bounty?
