A bit of local history. Folkestone Harbour is now a venue for food, films and music

Photographed by Geoff Pullin on 31 May 1971, the unmistakeable vista of Folkestone Harbour. At the end of the platform is one of the ten BR(S) Class 419 Motor Luggage Vans, which operated from Victoria to Dover and Folkestone between 1959 and 1992. Eight of these still exist.

Just arriving from France is SNCF’s twin-screw turbine steamer Paquebot ‘Cote d’Azur’, one of several vessels to carry this name over the years. This one was built in Le Havre in 1951 and served the Cross-Channel routes until its final sailing on 30 September 1972. After a period of lay-up, the vessel was scrapped in 1974.

Kits is ready for the new season. Over the past few weeks we’ve been checking it over, repainting and doing a few minor maintenance tasks. We’ve even replaced the TV for a bigger one. We’re pleased to say bookings are very healthy for 2025 but there is still some availability. Head over to www.kitscottage.uk to check.

Within easy walking distance of Kits is Torbay of Hythe. They do great fish ‘n chips; either takeaway or eating in. Perfect for an evening without cooking.
