Nestled between Balangoda and Badulla in Nanperial, Baker's Bend stands at 1700 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Journey through the numbered bends, and at bend 23, you'll be treated to a spectacular sight of Samanala Lake. During the rainy season, the area transforms into a captivating scene, draped in white fog. The cool temperatures provide a refreshing escape, and the road adorned with waterfalls and tea plantations makes the journey as memorable as the destination. St Clair’s is one of the widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka and called the “Little Niagara of Sri Lanka”. It is a strikingly beautiful waterfall, which is approximately 80 meters in height and 50 meters in width. This waterfall runs over a rock ridge, splitting into three cascades, and drops into a pool. This beautiful falls are situated close to the town of Talawakele on the Hatton-Talawakele Highway in Nuwara Eliya District.

THE LOVE STORY - MOUNT LAVINIA Thomas Maitland was the British Gover...
17/02/2024

THE LOVE STORY - MOUNT LAVINIA Thomas Maitland was the British Governor in Ceylon in the early 1800s. Upon arrival in Sri Lanka, he built a grand country mansion for himself in a town called Galkissa close to the capital Colombo, the now Mount Lavinia Hotel.
The Story
This much spoken about British Governor was Sir Thomas Maitland who was assigned to Sri Lanka (previously known as Ceylon), during the years 1805-1811. As a 46 year old Bachelor, Governor Maitland was also known as “King Tom” because his character – according to his biography – was “a great human force, controlled by an iron will”.
When Governor Maitland first came to Sri Lanka, there was a welcoming party held in his honor. At this party, he noticed a beautiful local gypsy dancer whose name was Lavinia (Lovinia) Aponsuwa. This pretty lady came from a mix of Portuguese and Sinhalese ancestry, and her father was the leader of the dance troupe.
Sir Thomas was awestruck with her charming smile and soon found himself falling in love with her. His obsession of Lavinia made him take every possible opportunity to get to see more of her. Lavinia regularly danced in her father’s troupe in front of the Governor and his guests. All of the parties that the Governor held involved masked balls, lovely evening gowns and top hats.
During his reign in Sri Lanka, Sir Thomas Maitland was determined on constructing a massive country residence for himself in Ceylon and for this; he chose a stunning beachfront property in ‘Galkissa’ (Mount Lavinia), 10 km south of Colombo. People who were around during that era believed that this location was picked because Sir Thomas saw Lavinia bathing in that part of the sea.
The love story between the Governor and Lavinia – the dancer – was a secret and none of the British officials in England or the Ceylon nationals knew about it. Lavinia’s house was very close to the governor’s new residence. So when the gala mansion was being constructed, Sir Thomas instructed the contractor to make a secret tunnel to her house. One end of the tunnel was in a wine cellar of the Governor’s house while the other end of the tunnel opened to a drinking water well in the compound of Lavinia’s residence. Both lovers met in secret because it was rather untraditional for a bachelor British Official to be seen with a local dancing girl.
As time passed and the affair got stronger, notice of the love story came to the attention of colonial masters in Britain who would not accept any deviation from Crown and God. They sternly looked down on Governor Maitland and in 1811 the British Foreign Office sent a ‘routine transfer’ for the Governor to the Mediterranean Island of Malta. Sir Thomas Maitland served as a governor of Corfu during the British administration in Malta and he also died as a bachelor in the island.
By about 1920, the secret tunnel from Governor Maitland’s palace to Lavinia’s residence was sealed and the village surrounding the mansion became a well developed modern city. The city was named ‘Galkissa’, after the Sinhalese word “GalVissa” – meaning twenty boulders. Galkissa was then renamed to “Mount Lavinia” as a mark upon the beautiful dancing girl named Lavinia.
The massive country residence of the British Governor was then transformed into a hotel and named “Mount Lavinia Hotel”.
And that is the story of how this charming British Colonial heritage hotel built on a lovely beachfront became a legacy to the secret love story of dancing girl Lavinia and British Governor Sir Thomas Maitland.
During World War II, Mount Lavinia Hotel became a military hospital for the British Army. After the war ended in 1947, the hotel was re-established. If you have seen or heard of the film “The Bridge on the River Kwai”, you will notice some scenes filmed at Mount Lavinia Hotel.

NINE ARCH BRIDGE IN ELLA

The Nine Arch Bridge in Ella is on the Demodara loop and spans 91 meters at a height of 24m. The beautiful nine arches make it a very picturesque spot especially as it is located in a dense jungle and agricultural setting. Behind the railway, a forest is booming, and below, tea leaves are being cultivated. It’s truly one of the most amazing places to visit in Sri Lanka.

This beautiful 30m high Lovers Leap fall in Nuwara Eliya is incipient of the streams and brooks of Sri Lanka’s highest mountain, the Piduruthalagala (2524m). It flows over hard granite ledges and the water is collected in a tank and used for drinking.
In dry spells, the flow is languid The fall is said to derive its name from the tragic tale of a prince, who while hunting in the jungle, lost his way. He was rescued by a beautiful damsel, and the two became inseparable lovers. But the match was not to the liking of the prince’s subjects, so the two decided to immortalise their love by leaping from the top of the fall to their death.

Ceylon Tea Kiosk - The Pagoda Tea Rooms and the Green Cabin n 1884 when the Ceylon Tea Kiosk was established in the jetty of the Colombo Harbour. A group of enterprising British planters were the founding fathers of this establishment. Their objective was to sample their product, Ceylon Tea, to visiting tourists.
Closer towards the turn of the century, the Ceylon Tea Kiosk relocated to a building at York Street in the Colombo Fort. The Ceylon Tea Kiosk was re-named the Pagoda Tea Rooms – a name it earned from the pagoda-like structure on top of the building. The Pagoda Tea Rooms some years later made its move to Baillie Street.
The Pagoda Tea Rooms lived up to its name and was the home for colonial tea time specialties. It is said that the Pagoda Tea Rooms introduced pastries to Ceylon.
Following the first world war, Mudaliya Thomas Rodrigo purchased controlling interest in the Pagoda Tea Rooms. By this time, the Colombo Fort had become a hub of activity. From Baillie Street, the Pagoda Tea Rooms shifted to its iconic Chatham Street location which has been featured in pop culture media such as the Duran Duran’s Music Video, Hungry Like The Wolf.
The Mudaliya, who had invested his wealth in the business, was growing old and tired. He then entrusted his eldest son Cyril Thomas Rodrigo to take over the business.
Young, energetic and fresh from his college learning, Cyril Thomas Rodrigo took up the challenge and immersed himself in the operations of the Pagoda Tea Rooms. Very much like his father, he found himself totally conversant with the trade. Catering and restauranteering seemed to have been a part of his blood.
Cyril would innovate, experiment and create new items for the menu. He was personable and would find time to talk to his customers, learn of their needs and deliver. He became a popular figure amongst both his patrons and his staff. Being detail oriented, it was his vision that drove the business and saw beyond the horizon.
It was during his time that Sri Lankan food was introduced to the menu. It must also be noted that the famous ‘cheesecake’ (which has no cheese) was founded – a truly authentic invention of the Pagoda Tea Rooms
A new line of business
The worldwide depression of the 30’s had taken its toll. The Pagoda Tea Rooms also suffered, and times were not as good as they were. The Mudaliyar was unsure of the future of his investment.
Young Cyril endeavoured to build the business. He concentrated his times and efforts towards the management of the Pagoda Tea Rooms. His wife Mallika was a natural in the culinary art. Her innovative contributions, support, belief and luck brought strength to Cyril.
The far thinking Cyril developed a new line of business. He undertook to cater at “receptions” hosted in the leading residences of Sri Lanka. This service gained a reputation for its excellence overnight. His catering services extended to all parts of the island. No place was too far nor was any function too small for the Pagoda Tea Rooms to accept the order.
History records that Cyril catered to receptions hosted in the deep south to the far north. His personal attention and presence was the hallmark of this service.
At the outbreak of the 2nd world war, the colonial partners sold their equity to Cyril and returned to their motherland to serve their country.
The 2nd world war was not a welcome sign to the Rodrigo’s. In fact, it was perceived to be a gloomy period. Now with a home to manage, five children to educate and a loan to repay the Pagoda Tea Rooms seemed a white elephant.
Cyril with his vision of seeing beyond the horizon borrowed even more money and purchased the Green Cabin from Mrs. De Vos, she was a lady of Dutch origin and had established this restaurant in 1936 in the heart of Colombo’s residential district.
He proudly boasted that his two restaurants never closed during the days of the war, even though many others put-up shutters and evacuated from the capital city following the bombing of Colombo.
The patronage of a large number of servicemen stationed in Colombo and the enhanced custom from the local patrons helped to yield high profits. Cyril was fast to settle his borrowing with these earnings.
Cyril Thomas’ second son Devaka Rodrigo joined the business in 1951 and was assigned to the Pagoda Tea Rooms. His youngest daughter, Kantha, joined the business in 1956 and was assigned to the Green Cabin.
As the years went by, his other two daughters joined the business and contributed towards its management and growth. Indrani, the eldest of the five joined in 1969 followed by Sinthatmany who joined the company in 1973. In 1977, Mahesa, Cyril Thomas’ oldest son joined his brothers and sisters to share in their father’s pioneering vision.
Cyril Rodrigo Restaurants is a unique institution. It’s a family business with a special character. A place where times has stood still. A legend that will never be forgot.
The unity and harmony that the legendary Cyril Thomas Rodrigo fostered has kept this institution in good shed. His beliefs are still upheld. He is revered and remembered with affection, admiration and gratitude.
Cyril Rodrigo Restaurants was perceived to be a family business and has remained thus, since its inception. Cyril’s vision for this unique institution is still upheld and will be upheld in the years to come from generation to generation.
The famous Green Cabin outlet on Galle Road, Kollupitiya was closed down on July 31.2018. The restaurant became a much loved venue in Colombo receiving a huge demand for its chocolate, lemon and love cake, cheese cakes, pies and lamprais. It was also a popular restaurant for Sri Lankan cuisine, much sought after for a ‘hopper treat’. Meanwhile the other Green Cabin outlets of Pagoda Tea Rooms,Vauxhall Street, Templers Road, Pepiliyana, Kotte, Nawala and Rajagiriya will be fully functional. From Green Cabin web page
