How fabulous!

Our green-fingered team of volunteers have been busy preparing our planters across town ready for our second year of home-Combe-grown fruit + veg for the year ahead! 🍅🥦🥕🧅🧄🍓
Our network of 11 containers have now been made ready for the growing season; onions, garlic and broad beans already in place in some areas; fleece-covered where needed to keep them protected from frost over the winter.
Last year’s crop of potatoes, tomatoes, courgettes, herbs and strawberries were reportedly enjoyed by local residents and passers-by – we encourage everyone in our community to take a taste, but leave the plants! Unexpectedly short of an onion or a sprig of rosemary for the pot? – then help yourselves!
It’s so easy to grow-your-own veg and fruit – hopefully this project will inspire you to give it a try! You don’t need a garden, just a big pot for potatoes, onions etc, or small pots for herbs; peat-free compost and a little TLC! 💚

Wild & Edible Ilfracombe is a community food project in collaboration with local partners and supported by the North Devon Coast National Landscape (previously AONB) Sustainable Development Fund.

It’s been disappointing because it’s meant I’ve had to start from scratch in building up a community, and certainly from a local perspective, Facebook has been my main way of advertising events. Just like the trees shedding their leaves, we can also use Autumn as an opportunity to shed stuff that we don’t need anymore. If this idea speaks to you in some way then join us for a transformative one-day retreat led by skilled facilitator Claire Hunter.

Claire has worked in clinical education for almost 25 years, as well as running her own private consultancy. Over this time she has trained and coached thousands of people, to expand into their true potential. Alongside her natural zest for life, she has loads of tools to draw on as a qualified adult teacher, a life coach, mindfulness teacher, mental health first aider, reiki practitioner and trainee breath-work instructor. But she isn’t sitting in the seat of ‘master’. She approaches all that she does with lived experience of trauma and the normal everyday ups and downs of the human experience.

The day will run from 9am to 6pm on Saturday 18th November with an outline a bit like this:
Yoga
Breath-work
Meditation
Creative activity
A mindful walk on the South West Coast Path
Journaling
A cacao circle
Chakra exploration and optional reiki touch

The cost is £110 including all activities, lunch, cacao, refreshments, art materials, journal and gift bag. For EX34 residents, there is a 10% discount.

North Devon is a great place for cycling enthusiasts, with its stunning countryside, quiet country lanes, and challenging hills offering a range of cycling experiences for all levels of ability. Whether you are a keen road cyclist, mountain biker, or just looking for a leisurely ride through beautiful scenery, North Devon has plenty to offer.

One of the most popular cycling routes in North Devon is the Tarka Trail, a 180-mile circular route that takes in the beautiful landscapes and historic towns of North Devon. The trail follows the route of an old railway line and is relatively flat and easy, making it perfect for families and leisure cyclists.

For more experienced road cyclists, there are plenty of challenging routes in North Devon, with steep hills and winding roads offering spectacular views of the coast and countryside. Popular routes include the Devon Coast to Coast route, which takes cyclists from Ilfracombe to Plymouth, and the Exmoor Explorer, a 65-mile route that takes in the stunning scenery of Exmoor National Park.

Mountain bikers are also well-catered for in North Devon, with a range of trails and routes to suit all levels of ability. The North Devon Coast Trail is a challenging 38-mile route that takes in some of the best off-road terrain in the area, while the Tarka Trail also offers plenty of opportunities for off-road cycling.

Whether you are cycling for leisure or looking for a more challenging ride, North Devon offers a fantastic range of cycling opportunities, with something to suit all levels of ability and interest.

Love or loathe?

Verity is a striking 20-metre tall bronze and stainless steel sculpture created by the British artist Damien Hirst.

Situated on Ilfracombe’s pier overlooking the Bristol Channel, she has become a major tourist attraction and has divided opinion among locals and visitors alike.

Some people view Verity as a powerful work of art that stimulates debate and discussion about the human condition, while others find it disturbing and offensive. The statue has also been the subject of controversy due to its graphic depiction of a pregnant woman, which some people find exploitative and disrespectful.

Despite the mixed reactions, Verity has become a symbol of Ilfracombe and has helped to put the town on the map as a cultural destination. The statue is also an important part of Damien Hirst's legacy as one of the most influential and controversial artists of his generation.

The sculpture features a pregnant woman holding a sword while standing on a plinth of books, with her skin peeled away on one side to reveal her muscles, tissues, and unborn child. The sculpture is said to symbolize the beauty and complexity of the human body, as well as the fragility and vulnerability of life itself.

I've been living and making art in Ilfracombe for more than four years now- inspired by the beauty, wildness and quirks of this very special place. It's come time for the next adventure on the other side of the world, so I'm celebrating with an exhibition of my art-work and it's all 50% off.
