🚤 A Heroic Rescue Remembered! 🚤

🌊 This inspiring story is just one of many heroic tales tied to the lifeboats of Ilfracombe, which have been safeguarding lives here for nearly 200 years.

On this day...
71 years ago, in 1954, an 8,000 ton Navy tanker caught fire just off Ilfracombe. Three radio messages gave the news to those on shore. The first, at 5.24pm reported a fire. Five minutes later, the message was that the fire was out of control. After another eight minutes, the message was that the crew were preparing to abandon ship. They sent up flares and boats in the Bristol Channel, regardless of their size, headed through the darkness to the stricken tanker. The Ilfracombe Lifeboat, the Robert and Phemia Brown, was launched. But still the crew would not abandon the ship.

Robert Gifford, a donkeyman from Brixham fought the flames for an hour. "We did the best we could, he was reported as saying, but it was hopeless".

It was four hours until the last man left the tanker, all the crew being safely rescued by the lifeboat and other boats who came to help. Ten men covered in oil and trembling from the shock and the cold of the night were taken by the Robert and Phemia Brown to Ilfracombe Harbour. Their number included the only person to be injured who was taken to hospital.
