We had the honour of hosting the amazing team from We Are With You at our Mental Health at Work Collective session this week at Centre4 . With You is a drug, alcohol and mental health support charity, with over 80 services across the country. They provide free and confidential support for people facing challenges with drugs and alcohol. πŸ’™

Rich shared his incredible journey with us, as a former addict he has lived experience of dealing with addiction and being homeless. He highlighted the incredible support he received from With You, which fuelled his passion to help others. He began as a volunteer and now three years later, he is employed full time and is looking forward to his upcoming wedding. We also learned about their life-changing IPS service, a model dedicated to helping people get back into employment which is a huge aid to their recovery journey.

The session was informative, delivered with passion, and enjoyed by all. It was a fantastic opportunity to share, learn, collaborate, and network

If you're facing challenges with drugs, alcohol or mental health and you don’t know where to turn can help. https://www.wearewithyou.org.uk/

Happy International Women's Day! As always, we are proud of be a women led organisation and are celebrating all our colleagues as well as women across the globe.
Finishing the week, a reflection from our Wellbeing Advocate Nicki

πŸ’œ The theme for IWD this year is - what does this mean to you?
Inclusion is creating a culture where people feel a sense of acceptance and
belonging. It means that differences are not just tolerated, but embraced. Inclusive
workplaces should promote different voices which we can all learn from, and where
businesses can gain from a rich diversity of talent. It benefits everyone to make a
conscious effort to create an inclusive culture, and offer a platform to others,
especially those who are marginalised. To quote Toni Morrison: β€˜If you have some
power, your job is to empower somebody else’.

πŸ’œ How do you think yourself and OHS in our daily practice?
As a counsellor and psychotherapist, the key part of my work is forming relationships
that help people feel accepted for who they are. The humanistic approach of therapy
is built on a framework of empathy, genuineness, and positive regard, which are
qualities that I believe can be valuable in all relationships - not just those in the
therapy room. I lead a mental health group for OHS clients, which has included
session topics such as cultural diversity and understanding – led by guest speaker
Rehana Ashiq – and neurodivergence, amongst others. Our health education topics
have included women’s health and the menopause, which is gaining a great deal of
interest. Inclusion is an essential part of the conversation around workplace health
and wellbeing, a conversation that we at OHS are keen to promote.

πŸ’œ Who are some of the women that inspire you?
Without hesitation, our MD (also my mum), Lynne. She’s
been a single parent of four children who started with nothing, and through sheer
graft and determination, progressed in her career as an OHN,
and built our highly successful business. She has taught me that the sky is the limit,
and has instilled in me a strong β€˜work hard, play hard’ ethic!
Other inspirational women I admire are those who break the mould, such as Rosa
Parks, Maya Angelou, Malala Yousafzai, Greta Thunberg, and Dolly Parton. The
people I support who have been subjected to sexual violence and domestic abuse,
work incredibly hard to empower themselves and are a constant inspiration to me.
And finally, a shout out to my daughters, Amber (8) and Jasmine (6), who are both
inquisitive and charismatic young people; I hope they can learn from women past
and present to make an inclusive future for their generation.

International Women's day thoughts from another of our OHNs Rachael.

πŸ’œ How do you think yourself and OHS in our daily practice?
I feel myself and the rest of OHS do this by treating people as equals, by valuing others opinions, working well together and being a solid team to get the job done.

πŸ’œ Who are some of the women that inspire you?
I’m inspired by anyone who does their best, tries their hardest and is the best version they can be; by those who pull others up and don’t knock others down.

Continuing with our International Women's day conversations, we hear from Emma, our Receptionist at the Hull branch.

πŸ’œ The theme for IWD this year is - what does this mean to you?
Championing fair and equal treatment of everyone around us to empower people to live their most authentic lives. Celebrating our differences in gender identity as something that is a strength to society.

πŸ’œ How do you think yourself and OHS in our daily practice?
OHS succeeds in providing a person first environment. Being part of the reception team, I am often the first point of contact for our clients; ensuring everyone that comes through our doors feels welcome, comfortable and safe is my main priority.
I feel honoured to be surrounded by inspirational women day to day – both my colleagues and our clients working in industry.

πŸ’œ Who are some of the women that inspire you?
Paris Lees, author and the first trans women to be a columnist at Vogue and presenter on BBC Radio 1, for her strength, outspokenness and humour.
Annie Mac, DJ and author, for never hesitating to lift other women up and showing that you can be a strong career women and a wonderful mother.

Day three celebrating International Women's Day coming up on Friday, we hear from Dr Guy Clayton our OHP.
πŸ’œ The theme for IWD this year is - what does this mean to you?
To me it means celebrating the differences between us, whether it's regarding culture, gender, race, religion or sexual identity and ensuring that all have an equal voice and right to be heard, respectfully and patiently, even if we disagree at times.

πŸ’œ How do you think yourself and OHS in our daily practice?
I genuinely always feel part of the team and that my gender doesn't influence how I am treated by others in the workplace. My colleagues are funny, kind and dedicated. We work as a team and I feel like "family".

πŸ’œ Who are some of the women that inspire you?
- My boss, Lynne (who we heard from on Monday), who has been highly successful in business, yet retained her humour, humanity and integrity within a traditionally male-dominated medical profession.
- Michelle Obama for her honesty, enthusiasm, ability to communicate and all round decency, despite the prejudice she has experienced and witnessed during her life.
- Lady Gaga. For her talent, bravery and ability to remain authentic, despite the external pressure to conform.
- Greta Thunberg. For tirelessly trying to galvanise us into action to save our planet.
