Fields of Purple Phacelia

This fabulous sight you may have spotted around this time of year is phacelia. It grows tall, up to 1.2m and has lavender-blue summer flowers. It grows fast, too, and at lower temperatures (a good thing for the Highlands!), is a great pollinator plant and improves soil structure.

This is our field at Rhives - with brooding summer skies that look like they're about to burst.

All of our self-catering holiday properties come with their own BBQ, ready for you to cook up a feast.

Cygnets on the Estate!

* Sound on * for the beautiful calls of this swan family up on the loch.

Baby swans (cygnets) are born with short necks and covered in fluffy down which they will keep for the first year or two of their lives. They are able to run and swim within the first few hours after hatching and can live up to 20 years in the wild and 50+ in captivity.

We hope our guests enjoy the new additions to the estate wildlife!

What do you think of our new signage across the estate?

They are made from elm from trees that died on the estate from Dutch elm disease, which has now killed millions of elm trees in the UK over the last 50 years.

Gregor cut them to size and Fraser Signs in Inverness carved them. The estate team then put them out at each of the holiday properties.

Let us know what you think!

Struie Hill

Time from holiday properties: 20 mins
Wow factor: 10/10

Although you cannot guarantee whether you'll have glorious sunshine, drive through clouds or be turned away by the closed snow gates, the Struie is an experience to try when you stay with us. The viewpoint always has admirers capturing the view, and you can see why. When it's closed, you can drive the long way to the northern part of the estate, an equally beautiful journey through trees, winding roads (watch out for wildlife), past ruins and lochs.

Find the circular Struie Hill Walk on the Visit Easter Ross Peninsula website.

What a stunning part of the world!

Nature Hide 🐦 🔭

This is a very special place on the estate and one that often makes our guests squeal with delight.

Wander through one of the meandering paths, the edges left wild and long for the insects to enjoy, and find yourself at this secluded hut to sit and slow down.

Frequented by beautiful birds and resident red squirrels, you’ll find the hide on Mill Hill, tucked away between Swiss Cottage and Hill House.

We have an abundance of wildlife surrounding our holiday properties and you may well spot red deer, sika and roe deer, pheasants and black grouse during your stay. Don't forget your camera!

If you have experienced animal encounters during a getaway with us, please share them in the comments below!

The Balnagown that many of our guests see is our core estate ~ the holiday properties, summer houses, walled garden, wild swimming lochs... but the whole estate in fact stretches to 39,000 acres. Up on the northern part of the estate at Duchally (beyond Lairg), the landscape differs. Here are some incredible photos taken of the deer on the hills in a very highland colour palette. Just stunning.

Balnagown Walking Tour

We were delighted to work with The St Duthac Book and Arts Festival to offer a walking tour of the estate earlier this summer. It was organised as part of the annual festival but had been postponed from late last year due to bad weather - which meant they got to see the estate in full bloom!

The tour was led by the knowledgeable Jason Ubych from Tain & District Museum and Festival Group Vice Chairperson Catherine Williams. 60 people enjoyed an hour-long walk and talk around Balnagown Estate followed by refreshments in the Sports Hall. Jason and Catherine provided the group with fascinating facts and interesting stories regarding the long history of the castle and its occupants.

We were thrilled to work together on this and are looking forward to being involved in more exciting festival events coming up later in the year.

Thank you to the staff and volunteers who helped make this event such a success!

Insects for Breakfast, Anyone?

These sundews are currently flowering up by the top loch on the estate. They are carnivorous plants that produce blobs of sticky ‘glue’ all over the leaves that small insects become trapped in. The plant then curls its leaf edges over and releases digestive enzymes that consume the insect, passing nutrients into the plant.

They are found in wet, boggy and peaty areas where nutrients are low, or hard to access, hence why they eat flies.

If you'd like to hunt for sundews, look for wet, muddy-edged pools or track sides. The leaves are visible at any time of year, and the small spikes of delicate white flowers are up from late June to August.

Love Token

A very exciting find from our estate metal detectorist! A love token was made by bending a metal coin, particularly silver, to give to your one true love. It was an incredibly romantic gesture to sacrifice for someone so special.

I wonder what the story behind this love token was ~ and whether it was thrown away unrequited or dropped accidentally with much heartache to be hidden beneath our feet for years to come...

A huge thank you to Sandra for all her hard work in the community ~ she has done all of our Christmas decorations for years and brought much joy to so many people with her beautiful displays. Here's to the next chapter and spending precious time with your family. You will be missed! 💐

📣 Dear Valued Customers and Friends,

After 61 wonderful years of serving our community and beyond, I have made the heartfelt decision to close The Flower Shop Tain to embrace retirement.

Saturday 3rd of August will be our last day trading.

Our doors first opened in 1963 and have been a cherished part of The Royal Burgh of Tain ever since.

As a young girl, I worked alongside my dad, knowing I wanted to build my career as a florist and continue the family business. Looking back, it has been quite the journey—taking the business from its original Stafford/Hartfield Street base to larger premises at London House on the High Street, and finally to Morangie Road, where the journey will end. I can only hope I have made my father proud.

It has been an honor and a joy to provide you with our services, delivering to doorsteps up and down the length of the Highlands.

This decision wasn't easy, but it's time to spend more precious moments with my family and see more of the world. I will cherish every memory and relationships built through the decades.

Thank you for being an integral part of our story. Your support has meant the world to me and my family.

With heartfelt gratitude,
Sandra

Peatland Restoration

Some incredible peatland restoration footage from earlier in the year undertaken by Taiga Upland and Caledonian Climate. The work was completed in April and shows the rewetting and restoration that is ongoing. This prevents further CO2 emission and erosion of the peat and will slowly start to build up new peat and capture CO2.

Thanks to Peatland ACTION NatureScot and to Caledonian Climate for the incredible drone footage.

Watch this space for our upcoming podcast about peatland restoration.

Sunny Summer Days at Balnagown

Picture this: You've finally caught that trout that's been teasing you all morning, now you're listening to the crackle of the BBQ and prepping a fresh salad to go with it, with only the sound of the birds and the glug-glug-glug of that first pour of chardonnay. The dog is basking in the sun and the last chapter of your book awaits.
