As part of the Spirit of the Highlands and Islands project, Angela Johnson shared her story of 'coming home', capturing the essence of this remarkable place: "The Highlands is a community of love, support and understanding—welcoming and challenging, with unspoilt rugged beauty… We love the Highlands."

Like so many other stories, submitted, Angela's words celebrate the unique connection people feel with the Highlands.

Tales of community, resilience, and breathtaking landscapes will be shared within the walls and beyond at the Inverness Castle Experience when it opens next year, bringing the spirit of the Highlands to life for everyone who visits.

Sneak peek of the Journey Stone at the new Inverness Castle Experience! ✨

When the beautifully redesigned gardens on the castle esplanade open, visitors will be greeted by the Journey Stone—a unique and symbolic wayfinding marker welcoming everyone to the Highlands. Made possible by the generous support of Global Energy Group, the Journey Stone will mark the start or end of an unforgettable journey.

Its striking design by Mather & Co.—crafted from static steel cut panels set into Caithness stone—will create a dynamic ‘open doorway’ effect, symbolising the openness of the Highlands and the transitions we experience along the way—a perfect metaphor for exploration and discovery.

Surrounded by benches, the area will provide a perfect spot to rest, take in the breathtaking views of Inverness, and reflect on your travels.

As the nights draw in and one month left to the shortest day, winter in the Highlands brings with it a quiet magic, covering the mountains and glens in a blanket of snow and frost. There’s beauty everywhere here in the chill of the season – rivers frozen mid-flow, snow-covered trees, and landscapes transformed into scenes that could be straight from a storybook.

On clear nights, the wide-open skies come alive with countless stars, and if you’re lucky, with less light pollution you might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights dancing above. For those who love winter’s tranquillity, there’s nowhere like the Highlands. ❄️

The Inverness Castle Experience will become a gateway to the rest of the Highlands when it opens in 2025.

This Halloween, we bring you the haunting tale of Isobel Gowdie, the Witch of Auldearn. 🧙‍♀️ In 1661, Isobel’s confessions sent chills through the town: she claimed to shapeshift into animals, cast dark spells, and even fly on corn stalks with her coven! 🌿🦅 She spoke of her journeys to Elfane (fairyland) and the dark magic she used against her neighbours. Though her fate was sealed at Gallowhill, whispers say her spirit still roams Auldearn as the mysterious ‘green lady’. 👀🍃

Let's enjoy Halloween's witchy and spooky vibes but also take a moment to acknowledge the darker history underlying these traditions. It’s fun to embrace the eerie season, yet we should remember those 'witches' like Isobel Gowdie. They were ordinary people ruined by accusations of witchcraft and often suffered terrible fates.

✨Inverness Castle Experience will inspire you, through its stories, encouraging you to visit all of the Highlands. This story of Isobel Gowdie belongs to a ten-part series gifted by Nairn Museum. ✨

We're halfway through the tattie holidays here in the Highlands! 🥔✨ Did you know this break has its roots in potato picking? Back in the day, October was all about lifting tatties by hand across Scotland, including right here in the Highlands. The tattie holidays were introduced in the 1930s so children could skip school and help with the harvest – no wonder it was a popular time! 📚🚜

For many families, tattie lifting brought in a little extra money, which is why the October break stretched from one week to two in some places. Machines do the hard work these days, but the name – and our love of tatties – has stuck.

✨Stories gathered from across the Highlands have inspired the content for the Inverness Castle Experience.✨

These 3D scans will be featured in the People Room, within Inverness Castle’s South Tower Experience, allowing visitors to explore Highland history in a whole new way—digitally!

It’s a fantastic opportunity to connect with the past and inspire visits to the museums where these treasures are housed.
