Mathematician John Horton Conway was renowned for his love of games and bringing maths to the masses. He also left a legacy of famous quotes on the subject including “Becoming sufficiently familiar with something is a substitute for understanding it”.

Relevance?
Well…..we’ve been chatting to some of our customers who have travelled recently and many of them said – yes travel is more complicated (perhaps an adventure on it’s own) – yes it was worth it – but they took comfort from travelling somewhere familiar. Maybe a 🏨hotel🛎 or resort they’ve previously visited, their favourite 🛳cruise line 🛳(isn’t it handy when you know exactly what goes where in your cabin which seems like home from home), or a country with similarities to the UK. So the message - loud and clear was if you are feeling a little nervous about that first trip - stick to the familiar so you’re wearing those comfy pair of 🧦socks🧦 whilst you tackle the new requirements of travel in 2022.

Some think India is Marmite
Then Mr & Mrs W clearly like Marmite!!

We were so lucky in February 2020 to enjoy with our friends a private tour of India which was amazing and so well organised, visiting the golden triangle and North Goa. We had the wonderful experience of looking round Delhi old town seeing the ramshackle streets with cows mingling amongst the people and shops, taken through this spectacular chaos in a🛺 tuk tuk 🛺witnessing the mad driving that no western driver would like to drive in.
🤩🤩We also visited India’s jewel in the crown the "Taj Mahal", now we’ve all seen hundreds of pictures of it and we thought that we knew what to expect when we walked through the main gates and took our first look at the Taj Mahal, nothing prepares you for its incredible beauty it quite literally took our breath away and bought tears to the eyes, a sight not to be missed.🤩🤩

After touring the Golden Triangle we then relaxed for a week in Candolim North Goa enjoying its beautiful 🏖beaches🏖, wonderful food and wondering around its incredible fresh food markets, India was a wonderful experience and when the time is right a country we would love to visit again.

Either way, over the next few days enjoy as w continue our theme of looking back an d let our customers reminisce with us about some of their favourite holiday memories!

First stop - 🦁The Big Five!🦏

The staff at Il Moran know our customers so well they even know their⛺ favourite Tent!⛺
And I don't think they'll mind me saying how I remember that email about 20 minutes after the announcement and the sheer joy and excitement that the Government had taken Kenya off of the Red List. "We can squeeze in a short trip before Christmas" was the jist!

Our favourite holiday memories are going on Safari to the Maasai Mara Reserve in Kenya staying at the Il Moran Camp. The camp only has ten luxury tents, our memories of the camp are wonderful, from the 💂‍♂️saluting guard💂‍♂️ who greets you in and out of the site to the rest of the team to give you a perfect stay.

The game drives each day are spectacular, from the big game to 🦜small birds🐦. Best memories are 🐘elephants 🐘crossing in front of us, so quiet and regal, leopards in trees, prides of lions, 🦒giraffes🦒and young jackals. Not forgetting the wake up call of early morning coffee in bed, with hippos and early bird song on the river as your alarm call, followed by game drives.

Following on from part one of our look back today we hear from Sarah ....
....who had to confess her 🧁sweet tooth🎂 to the personal trainer.....

At the start of lockdown I got my passion back for cooking – 🍰baking sweet stuff🍰 in particular, especially since I have a very sweet tooth! Me and my Brother did a surprise Afternoon Tea for Mother's day, a surprise BBQ for Father's day and made our first ever Birthday Cake! Although this plan didn’t go very well alongside my training with my 👟personal trainer🏃‍♂️ as one of my goals when working with him was to eat healthier than I did before.
So his challenge to me was to walk ⛰Mount Everest⛰ in a week – that is 85,000 steps to do in just ONE week and yes I managed to do this, along with my Dad becoming my walking partner to keep me company. Oh we had such a laugh sometimes (although don’t tell him that as I used to make out he annoyed me).WHY? Well we used to walk past this house that was bright green and every day we walked past it he went on about how it “hurt his eyes” of course being very dramatic about it, but it is the hard times we have had over the last 18 months and you look back at memories like that which actually helped to get through those hard days.

Getting the bug for it two more 🚶‍♀️walking challenges🚶‍♀️ followed!
In March 2021 to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital. That was 60,000 steps throughout the month this time which seemed easy compared to my Mount Everest challenge - right? er NO. A swollen toe made it incredibly painful but undeterred I ‘hobbled’ through the pain to complete the challenge. Didn't help the swelling go down though.....
Then in June 2021 my brother and westie 🐶Hugo🐶 walked 60 miles to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Not much of a distance for us maybe - but you ask Hugo....! And it was hot. Great excuse for ice-cream!
Finally to my other passion - painting 💅Nails💅. Mum quite liked it - there was no Beautician Lockdown in our house because of COVID. I didn't - she never even left me a tip!
As for December and Christmas, time to work on my Christmas Shoeboxes to gift to the Homeless.

And in keeping with the Christmas theme, that in a wrap is me over the last 18+ months 🙂

I thought it was time to take an early look back at this 🎢rollercoaster🎢 that has been 2021 – not from our shop perspective but what we have all been doing. So here it goes…..starting with Antony & Andrea

What's more frustrating than sitting on a ✈12 hour long-haul flight✈? The simple answer - Not being able to sit on a 12 hour long-haul flight. For me – it’s not been a year for the usual fabulous 🌍gallivanting 🌍that I had become accustomed to in recent years. And how I’ve truly missed it.

I can’t wait for the chance to get back out there. Those boring long-haul flights, even more boring hours waiting in transit airports for connections and truly awful plane food. Remind me – did I really miss THAT?
Yes. Because it meant I could see sights come alive for real that I had seen on the TV or from websites; taste food you could never conjure yourself; meet people whose experiences you could never imagine; and share all of those special moments with those closest to you.
Oh yes, I miss it.

And what has Antony been up to……he explains how he went back to 🏫school 🏫
Normally at this time of year I would suddenly be realising that Next Year is actually a lot closer than I thought due to us spending a large chunk of December in far-away climes.

That has obviously left me at a loose end with nothing to do….
Those who know Andrea and I well will know that is very much tongue in cheek. A bit like New York – the city that never sleeps – we are busy beavering away on our business plans for 2022 and beyond. Ohh and I have gone back to “school” and started on my very own apprentice journey. This time next year I will be a marketing whizz. Apparently every day is a school day!

So as the nights draw in and the weather turns colder that has only left me thinking about Andrea and the ❄cold winter❄ she travels so far to avoid.
Then I remembered Andrea’s favourite way of keeping warm……….🐕dog on lap!🐕 And so we have welcomed a new addition to our house, Trixie to join Marley & Jess, although at 37.6kg she maybe a bit heavy for the lap for a while.
What better excuse now to wrap up and enjoy the Suffolk countryside this winter, reminisce about trips gone by and start thinking about adventures still to come.
