A quick over night to Burg on Ardmeanach for some National Trust for Scotland plant surveying . Catching glimpses of one of the uk rarest moths the slender scoth Burnet. Standing on the top of both waterfalls that are clearly seen from Iona. Quite often seen flowing up rather than down! A landscape scattered with ancient shielings in the remotest part of Mull.

Some of you may have been coming to Iona long enough to recognise the ship in the first three photos. The King George V was for many years the way you travelled to Iona. Anchoring in the sound you were transferred ashore by tender. I came across this model of her on show in Oban this week when I happened to see last sea going paddle steamer in the world Waverley on her annual visit to Oban

Walking though an island landscape I’m always on the lookout for subtle hints of the people that have lived and worked in those places over the centuries. This was yesterday’s find out on the Isle of Tiree. Crotagan or bait grinding hole. Shellfish, limpets, mussels would be ground down to be used as fishing bait. There are a few to be found on Iona too. Markers for the best shore fishing spots!

A view from the west side of Iona, may look untouched and wild but there’s so much to be able to interpret in the landscape of Iona, when out on one of Iona Trails walks. Explaining how the and when landscape formed. The story thousands of years of people living in the landscape and the marks they’ve left. Pointing out plants and animal that add too and create the current landscape. Along with being able to talk about the unique climate and influence of the sea and Iona’s position in the west of Scotland. www.ionatrails.com
