This week we have witnessed plenty of action on our new video bird feeder. It seems like a never ending job just keeping all our bird feeders topped up, to ensure our local wild bird population are well fed and content.
So far we have had Eurasian Jays, Jackdaws, Nuthatches, Robins, Blue t**s and a Green Woodpecker to name but a few.
We also regularly hear the Owls and Cuckoos in the surrounding woodlands.

Wow what a beautiful morning so far. After what feels like feeding time at the zoo, a stroll around the farm unearthed some amazing sights as Blackadon farm comes into full bloom.
We would also like to introduce our new Pekin ducklings. They were enjoying the sunshine this morning whilst they work on growing some feathers, and enjoying the view out to the sea at Mothecombe.

It's been a very busy week at Blackadon Farm with a lovely group from FitFarmsuk enjoying all that our beautiful location has to offer. We then started getting ready to welcome The Good Grief Project for what promises to be a very special weekend. Our team have again gone the extra mile to make sure that each cottage was perfect for the guest's arrival and we can't thank them enough, here's us enjoying the sunshine on the guest lawn during our lunch today.

It has been a fun filled Easter holidays at Blackadon Farm with an Eggtastic Egg Hunt, days out at Woodlands Family Theme Park, Pennywell Farm and Dartmoor Zoo.
We have also enjoyed bringing Buddy out for his first Devon adventures. He made it to Ugborough Beacon and enjoyed the amazing views. He has also completed part of the Southwest Coastal Path from Church Cove to Mothecombe Bay where he got to dip his toes in the water before lunch at The Schoolhouse.
We have loved spending time together as a family and we are already looking forward to the May half term to do some more exploring!
We have limited availability for the May half term and summer holidays so please contact us to secure your booking ☎️

Today (8th March) is International Women’s Day and this Sunday is Mother’s Day - and whilst it’s too late to book anything today (unless you’re already staying with us, in which case, bravo for your excellent organisational skills and forward planning!) then what better way to celebrate your Mum than to present her with a handwritten card with the promise of a stay with us scrawled inside (as well as the flowers, chocolates, and lunch engagement, obviously).

Or, to honour and celebrate the women in your life, organise a girly get together, a family fun time, or a romantic rendezvous. We have cottages to suit all sizes of parties and your paw-some friends can come too, as we’re 100% dog friendly. Wander on the moors, linger on the beaches, have the best break at Blackadon.

With Devon recognised as one of Europe’s finest food regions, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to food producers and farmers markets, alongside some fantastic restaurants, great cafés, and perfect country pubs. Devon does have a high concentration of superb restaurants – we’ve even got 22 Michelin-recognised and 4 Michelin 1-starred ⭐️ restaurants in the county.

Ask about our ‘Foodie Guide’ when booking your holiday, where we recommend to you 10-15 of our favourite spots ranging from a full English breakfast to the best pizza, banging fish and chips, a great burger, or if you’re fancying something a little high end, we can point you in the right direction for fine dining. We’ve been doing our homework and finding the best places for couples and families to go, with prices and accessibility taken into consideration to make it easier to plan your holiday.

Our beds have the finest mattresses on them, comparable to - and often better than - some of the finest hotels IN THE WORLD. Combine that with the clean fresh air surrounding us on Dartmoor, or a healthy dose of sea air after a day spent on the beach, and the ease in which you’ll relax here, you might just find yourself getting the best night’s sleep you’ve EVER had.

What’s your favourite thing to do when you holiday in the U.K.? Tell us below 👇🏼

Ours is that first time you wriggle your toes in the hot sand before going for a paddle in the waves, sighing happily at the prospect of the holiday ahead.

Yours may be the prospect of the first Devon cream tea - and if you want to avoid the age old heated Devon v. Cornwall debate, DON'T say you like the jam on first. 😆

Don't forget tell us your favourite things that you look forward to below ...

Did you know that today, February 22nd, is National Walking the Dog Day?

The Cottages at Blackadon are super dog-friendly - just ask our two, Sapphi and Major.

Bring your doggo to Devon and we'll make sure their comfort is taken care of just like yours. You can explore the beaches and bridleways to your heart's content, but please keep your dog on a lead near any livestock (sheep, cows, horses, chickens, etc.) at all times, especially if you walk on Dartmoor. And always close the gate behind you and latch it. That way your dog and the livestock will all stay safe and happy. :)

Did you know … the following facts about the distinctive Scots Pine trees above us?

Droving was the ancient process of driving livestock (cattle, sheep, pigs, turkeys, and geese) to markets on foot that went on for hundreds – if not thousands – of years. Often, drovers would walk them for hundreds of miles from Scotland, Wales, or Devon to the markets in London – specifically Smithfield - meaning they would need all the help they could get from way markers on their long journeys.

Drovers adopted the practice, used by Scottish drovers, of carrying pine cones with them and planting clumps of three or five Scots pines as way markers. Indeed, it is thought the Scots pine, once extinct in England and Wales, was reintroduced by drovers. Pines are fast-growing, evergreen and stand out like an alien species – they appear almost black from a distance. These pines were easily recognisable all year round and in poor light (as you can see from our photos through the mist).

Clusters of pines (clusters of three were the drovers’ signpost) could simply indicate the best route through difficult terrain - especially in ‘dead’ ground (ground that is hidden from an observer due to undulations in the land) - maybe a junction or river crossing, but they’d also flag a favourite inn or friendly farm that would provide overnight shelter for the drovers or secure grazing for the livestock. These drovers’ signposts are still visible in the Devon landscape and contribute to its unique character. (Railway companies also used the same system to mark their stations in the age when people walked to them.)

If you venture up to the moors from Blackadon, you will soon notice the row of Scots Pines between us and the wilderness – not only did they lead drovers to market, but walkers off the moor, and guests down to Blackadon. They’re a comforting sight and the sign that you’re nearly ‘home’. Now you’ll be seeing Scots Pine way markers all over the U.K. and understand the job they have been doing for all these years.

Pick your time to come and visit us, as there’s so much more besides our beautiful scenery, amazing restaurants, fantastic pubs, glorious walks, wonderful beaches, incredible history, and heritage. 😊

You can choose from the National Firework Championships 🎇in August (14-15), or horse racing 🏇 and a country day out at the point-to-points in Flete Park (20 April & 4 May), agricultural 🐄🐑 show season runs from July-September (Yealmpton (Wed 31st July), Totnes (Sun 28th July), Kingsbridge (7 September), County Shows Devon (16-18 May) Cornwall (6-8 June), Steam Fairs (Torbay 2 August), Devon Truck Show (18-19 May), Brixham Heritage Sailing Regatta (25-26 May), English Riviera Air Show 🛩 (1-2 June), Tavistock Steam and Vintage Fair (2 June), Classic Car Show (8 June), Plymouth Armed Forces Day (29 June), Back to the 1940s day at South Devon Railway, Buckfastleigh (6-7 July), Tavistock Goose Fair (9th October), Torbay Air Show (1-2 June), and these don’t even scratch the surface.

We’ve got so many attractions from the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth to Pennywell Farm just up the road, we’ve country estates (Powderham Castle, Castle Drogo, Saltram House), and at least two zoos (Dartmoor and Paignton), you’ll probably find it hard to stop exploring.

But the good thing about that is it just means you’ll have to come back and stay next year. 😉

On a clear day you can see the sea, and on a sunny day it looks like a ribbon of burnished gold stretching across the horizon.

With beaches from Mothecombe, Wonwell, Ayrmer Cove, Bigbury Bay, Burgh Island, Bantham, South Milton and Thurlestone and then all the way to Torbay there are many sandy beaches and a few pebbly ones, with rock pools and seaweed in abundance.

Some are windswept and peaceful with nothing but sea and sand, others ideal for a family day out with gastro buses, tearooms, baristas, and coffee trucks. Which beach will become your favourite when you stay?

If you’re a cycling enthusiast, then you should consider setting up your ‘base camp’ with us at The Cottages to enjoy some incredible routes during your stay. Whether you prefer road biking or mountain biking there’s so much to do around here.

Cycle the ‘Dartmoor Way’, a 90-mile-long circular circle trail that winds its way around quiet Devon lanes and minor roads within the glorious Dartmoor National Park, using traffic-free cycle tracks wherever possible and linking hamlets, villages, and towns along its length so you can take in the beauty of your surroundings at your own pace. From the narrow twisting lanes to the open panoramic landscape of the open moor with plenty of country pubs and cafes to visit along the way, you can take a couple of days to enjoy or a whole week. Apparently, if you do the route in the anti-clockwise direction the hills are a little more forgiving! (www.dartmoorway.co.uk)

As well as the main circular route, there is a 27 mile-long High Moorland link. This provides a 'figure of eight' route, or you can choose the shorter north or south circular routes.

Alternatively, take your mountain bike along the nearby Puffing Billy trail, which begins less than half a mile from us, and is an 8-mile continuous gravel track along what was previously a railway track to a former China clay pit. You could load up your bikes and go to Haldon Forest Park, where there are loads of great mountain bike trails (and Go Ape! For the kids too). Or there are more bike trails at Cann Woods (Plympton is 25 minutes away) where you could also have fun trying out their Segway tours.

28/01/2024

No matter where in the UK you live, you will be hard pressed to find clearer skies to enjoy the constellations above our heads than in the foothills of Dartmoor. Whether you are a bit of a star gazing enthusiast or you need a guidebook or an app (try the ‘Night Sky’ one) to help you identify them, or whether you don’t care what star is what and you just want to lose yourself in the wonder of those galaxies stretching far, far away, then a short walk onto the moor, or even just onto the footpath leading up there behind the cottages is enough to fill you with joy and peace. And when you've had your fill (or have just got a bit chilly) you can pile back to the Cottages for a hot chocolate ☕ (or a hot toddy 🥃!).

You might want to plan a trip for when the Perseid meteor shower (also known as the Perseids) is active. The next Perseids shooting star display will occur between 17 July and 24 August, and should peak around the night of 12 August and before dawn on 13 August, 2024.
