Day 9 in Peru: the one we’d all been waiting for. 𝗜𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹 🥾

An early start, we boarded the 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘂 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻. Those who were not hiking stayed on until Aguas Calientes, whilst those of us who were had to 𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲. I was slightly nervous at this point. I hadn’t really considered how hard it might be, but 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 gave me a good insight into what the day would hold 🚂

The first 6km were an 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 and definitely requires a decent level of fitness. Our guide was 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 – he would stop along the way (which I think was his way of giving us a sneaky little break!) to tell us all about the 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗮𝘀, and the 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘀𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗮 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝘀. Once we hit half-way, we stopped for a quick lunch in a shelter, and came across some other hikers doing the trail 🌺

The next 4km are known as ‘𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗮 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘁𝘀’ – up and down, over and over again. This was significantly more manageable (apart from being stung by an Amazonian wasp – that one hurt!), until we hit the ‘𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗼 𝗞𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀’, which is an 𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝟵𝟬-𝗱𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹 that you have to 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗻 𝗚𝗮𝘁𝗲. But my gosh was it worth it! Once we reached the top, we were welcomed by 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗽𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗵𝘂 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝗰𝗵𝘂, and cracked a beer to celebrate. The hard part was done 😅

The final 2km were downhill. Heavy on the knees, but easier on the lungs. At this point we were 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗷𝗼𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗪𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱. We made it to Machu Picchu in good time, just right to see the 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁. I still get goosebumps thinking about it! ⛰️

Tired and worn, we opted to get transport down to Aguas Calientes, before hopping in the shower and hitting the town for some well-deserved pints. The next day, we headed 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗵𝘂 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝗰𝗵𝘂 𝘃𝗶𝗮 𝗯𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹. It was much busier this time, as this is the only area tourists can visit by vehicle 🚎

This is by far 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 of not only my South America trip, but my life! My next post will be all about 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗯𝗼𝘄 𝗠𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻, and wrapping up our Peruvian Adventure with G Adventures 🇵🇪

The second part of our G Adventures trip took us into the 𝗦𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆 🌳

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝘂𝗽 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗮 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗼, where we touched down and the lack of oxygen really hit us! The plan was to spend a few days in and around the Cusco area to acclimatise 🌆

Our first afternoon we 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗲, enjoyed local food, and found ourselves drinking 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗣𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 in a karaoke bar. Olivia and I’s performance was a hit (if I do say so myself) 🎤

Waking up less than fresh, our wonderful guide Edwar took us on a 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗼, showing us all the sights, and explaining the 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗮𝘀. Throwing in a few personal tidbits, we got a 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 into growing up in the Peruvian Andes. Afterwards, we headed to a farm to meet the most adorable 𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗮𝘀. Despite the pouring rain, it was such a 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 – and Edwar kindly lent me his jacket so I wasn’t cold. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗚 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀! 🦙

From Cusco, we drove into the Sacred Valley, where we wandered around 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲, before 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀 and tackling a downwards journey through the 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝗰 𝗣𝗼𝗰. I loved this day – chatting away with newfound friends, being 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗳𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 – all whilst having the sun beaming down on us. We spent our night in Ollantaytambo, 𝗮 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗻 with local bars overlooking the square 🥾

Landing into Lima, I 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗺𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 - the urge to go to Peru is what instigated my whole 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲! ✈️🇵🇪

I opted for a small-group G Adventures tour as they plan the ultimate travel experience that blends 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀, 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, and a focus on 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 🗺️👩🏻‍🤝‍👩🏽

We stayed in the Barranco area of the city, which I would highly recommend. It was an 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰, 𝗯𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱. If you're looking for something a little fancier, Miraflores hits the mark. What to do? Spend your day exploring the historic Plaza Mayor, Friendship Park, and the multitude of fantastic museums, before having an 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸 🖼️🌃

We headed from Lima into the desert, which was nothing short of incredible. Boarding a buggy, we were 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝘆 𝗱𝘂𝗻𝗲𝘀 for an 𝗮𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲-𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 afternoon. The excitement of 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 before 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲 at crazy angles was not one for the faint of heart, but 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 nonetheless. Our day was topped off 𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝘂𝗻𝗲𝘀, attempting to stay on our feet, and laughing as we 𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 🏜️🏂🏽

For those who enjoy a spark of nightlife, suprisingly 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹. Good music, good vibes, good beer - what more could you want? 🍻🎷

Feeling a little tender the next day, we opted to explore a nearby 𝗣𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼 𝗩𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘆𝗮𝗿𝗱, where we learnt all about how pisco is made, and even 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀! We then grabbed some beers and hiked the gruelling (okay, it wasn't that bad) hour up the steep dunes to 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀. Sureal, breathtaking, mesmerising - I can't even find the words to describe it 🍇🌆

Finally, we were off to Paracas, where we hopped on a boat to 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘀 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀. The dramatic rock formations and the famous geoglyphs add to the 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲, home to sea lions, penguins, and thousands of seabirds. Who knew 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘃𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲? 🦢🛥️
