Hog & Fitch

Hog & Fitch We provide a professional conservation cleaning and collections care service to museums, art galleries, historic houses, churches and private collectors.

Hog and Fitch are Angela Bell and Margaret Reid. Together we bring 35 years of professional experience working with a range of historic collections in museums, art galleries, and historic buildings – and a passion and care for what we do. We use our experience to select the correct cleaning approach for the unique needs of each object. It's all about getting the right balance between removing harm

ful dust and dirt, but not causing abrasion in the process,

Our focus is on preventive conservation; we are not conservators and we will notify you if we see anything which requires a conservator's input. Hog & Fitch offer the following services:

• Conservation cleaning, working to existing programmes or devising new routines
• Object handling, moving and packing
• Condition reporting, inventory checking and associated documentation
• Assistance with inventory photography and associated documentation
• Supervising volunteers in preventive conservation roles
• Conservation engagement sessions during open hours and events or via blogs, talks, demonstrations, articles or social media
• Emergency procedures training and documentation
• Pest management routines and associated documentation
• General assistance in times of staff shortages, including front of house activities
• Training in preventive conservation and conservation cleaning techniques

Whether it's one precious object from your personal collection, or a complete historic interior, we're happy to talk about how we can help.

A deep conservation clean involves getting to all the awkward bits - and you're working around fragile objects and surfaces all the time, as well. That means you can spend almost as much time checking condition reports and surfaces, setting up equipment properly and moving it around carefully as you do on the cleaning itself. The spectacular state rooms at Powis Castle have more than their fair share of fragile objects and surfaces - and plenty of highly decorative features where dust can lurk. That means another perfect challenge for the Hog & Fitch team! It was a great pleasure to work with the team Powis Castle and Garden NT

Started the week over on the East coast at National Trust Gunby Hall, helping with building work protection. Ended it in the charming small local church of St James the Less dealing with the sort of mould issues that have plagued so many places as a result of changes in use and access during lockdown.

Harvington Hall has more than its fair share of original fragile surfaces to consider during a conservation clean. There's something astonishing around every corner. We've been doing a lot of very careful lifting off of cobwebs and assessing the right approach for different materials but just spending time working in these spaces feels incredibly special. Fortunately there's plenty of work still to do...

Tricky surfaces to deal with in this week's session at Levens Methodist Church: an uneven surface and accretions on the altar table and a tiled floor that has borne generations of wet feet, as well as plaster and paint from recent building activities. And, yes, that is snow outside. What a good thing we're used to the cold!

Happy to be ending this turbulent year with a good old post-building work clean at Levens Methodist Church. We've been thinking of all our friends in the arts and heritage sectors. We hope for easier times for us all in 2021.

So impressed by the progress with the work at Seaton Delaval Hall, despite such a challenging year. And a sunny walk on the beach is no bad thing, either.

Conservation cleaning and condition reporting large complex objects with fragile surfaces and lots of awkward spaces to creep around in - and all in the historic Cornish setting of lovely Godolphin. This is just the kind of project Hog & Fitch enjoy, although you might have heard just a bit of grunting and groaning as we squeezed into those more awkward spots.

A winter clean is the chance to get right underneath things and up on top of them, check it all carefully and do the sort of work that would be too disruptive to carry out when a house is open to visitors.

Enjoying being back at Dunham Massey and seeing how some familiar spaces are getting on after another busy year of visitors. These might seem like robust working rooms but they are full of fragile, friable surfaces with decisions to be made every step of the way.
