Fab first tour of the season, great to see some familiar faces returning - bit mixed weather wise with sunshine and hail showers but all had a great time 💚

Fabulous show of native daffodils and woodland spring flowers 🌼, marsh harrier and a raft of wetland birds 🦅 , finished off by sharing stories with some veteran trees 🌳

Time for a cuppa and a warm up ☕️

Not quite the post I had planned for today but never the less, here’s a little story for you……

On this beautiful sunny morning I set out onto Whitbarrow Scar for a run - via to pick up some of their delicious juice for tours, which start next week 😍 - I pushed my legs to the top and stood for a while admiring the views, which are stunning, and reminding myself how lucky I am to have all this on the doorstep.
I then headed along the scar and as I started to descend the hill - admiring the violets which have started to bloom - I slipped on some scree and stacked it onto the ground - clearly I needed a closer look at those violets 😀
Not to be dismayed on such a beautiful day I carried on running down the hill with a hole in my trousers and a few holes in my hands 😬 I decided it would be wise to find somewhere to wash the dirt and grit out of my wounds before I found my way home - cue the amazing ‘First Aid’ Phil and his partner who kindly patched me up so I could run the 2km back to my car.

What I wanted to post was - hey, what a lovely day, I’m out and about prepare for tours season which literally starts next week and I’m all excited, the spring flowers are starting to bloom, the birds are singing and the butterflies are out 🌺 🐦 🦋

I promise I look after you on a tour better than I look after myself when out running - I even carry a first aid kit and everything ☺️

It’s a butterfly kind of day 🦋💚

Spotted this small tortoiseshell basking in the sun on my morning dog walk (more a gentle amble these days, so plenty of time for me to spot butterflies)☀️ 🐶

The sun, the blooming of flowers and the flutter of a wing, all bring a little bit of hope to the world, something we need to hold on to 💚

I love this beautiful grass 💚

Yes, grasses are beautiful - this is the lovely blue moor-grass, named after the steel blue flowers that appear in early spring.
They are the first unassuming signs of spring on the limestone grasslands around Morecambe Bay, a stronghold for this localised species.
I love searching for the first flowers, it’s a treat to find them each time 💚

Did you know today is International Tour Guide Day?

I don’t think I ever dreamed that I’d be a wildlife tour guide - I’ve always loved wildlife and exploring nature but I was never one to put myself out there in front of a crowd.

When I was at university I snagged a year out working at Chester Zoo which further fuelled my passion for wildlife and conservation, and suddenly I started talking to crowds of people about the wonders of the natural world and found I really enjoyed it.

That’s why these days I love running guided tours sharing stories of wildlife and the land, frankly you’ll be hard pushed to get me to shut up sometimes 😃

It’s 🐦

The perfect time to set up a nestbox on your house or in your garden.
There are lots of different types of nest boxes which are preferred by different types of bird - robins prefer an open fronted box whereas blue t**s prefer a safe secure box with a small entrance hole.
If you’re planning to put up a box then watch for which birds you see in the area and opt for the right box for the birds you think you might attract.

The National Nestbox or RSPB websites have some great resources to help you choose.

So happy to be back running on the fell near our house again 💚🏃‍♀️

The access bridge has been shut for over 6 months. I didn’t realise how isolated that had made me feel until I got back out there today - the joy of being out in nature cannot be beaten.

I don’t know how our government cannot see the integral link between natural and social wellbeing, it is fundamental they work together. If the price of ‘growth’ is the loss of nature then it’s the loss of humanity as well.
Political rant over but my bid to change things will continue…..

Morecambe Bay is host to over 1/4 million birds each year, many of which will pass through Leighton Moss. A few notes from my visit this morning, a nice bit of relaxed bird watching. A little collection from my woodland wander this evening. I love foraging in the undergrowth for the discarded evidence of life, seeking out the slight change in form or colour on the woodland floor that leads to a discovery of treasure.
