BHS Ride Out UK

BHS Ride Out UK The British Horse Society is the UKโ€™s largest and most influential equestrian charity.

The British Horse Society is the UKโ€™s largest and most influential equestrian charity working to improve equestrian access. We achieve this through an access team at our HQ in Stoneleigh, and a network of more than 200 experienced, voluntary bridleway officers, and a growing 150 Equestrian Access Groups throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The British Horse Society's Equestria

n Access Groups are an important part of our society and not only uphold our values and promote equestrian access at a grass-roots level - they can be a fun, sociable meeting place for riders, carriage drivers and horse lovers, and make a difference for future generations in their area. We encourage the groups to forge links with us, so we can work together for the common good of all horses, riders and drivers. We have nearly 150 Equestrian Access Groups affiliated to us, and would encourage anyone who has an interest in horses and would like to do more to champion equestrian access in your area, to consider joining us. Contact [email protected] or look on our website to find your nearest group. The British Horse Society cannot achieve the great successes we do without members. If you would like to join us, support our work, and reap the benefits of BHS membership, please visit our website www.bhs.org.uk.

๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿป Bridleway clearance success ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿป

A section of Bridleway S39/33, Piddlehinton, Dorset, had become completely overgrown with vegetation and unusable for horse riders for many years. ๐Ÿ‚

A local rider got in contact with the BHS to ask for advice on how to get the bridleway cleared. Philip Hackett, Access Field Officer for the South West, contacted Dorset Council countryside Ranger Team, who quickly set about getting the route cleared. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Last week the local rider who originally reported the obstruction rode the route for the first time since it had been cleared and added, โ€œIโ€™d like to thank the BHS Access team, and the Dorset Council countryside Ranger Team, for getting the stretch of previously overgrown and blocked bridleway on S39/33 at Piddlehinton, back open. This section has been blocked for many years, so itโ€™s great to have access to it again. We now have a safe route which links up with the existing bridleway.โ€ ๐Ÿ˜Š

Gloucestershire Police got in contact with Philip Hackett, BHS Access Field Officer for the South West, about a concern they had about horse riders riding along the busy A46 near Little Sodbury, to access a staggered bridleway crossing. ๐Ÿด

The BHS suggested that the vegetation between a hedge and a row of trees could be cut back to create a parallel off-road route. ๐ŸŒณ

With thanks to South Gloucestershire Public Rights of Way Team, this work was carried out within a couple of months. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

๐Ÿ  Congratulations to Barratt Homes for receiving the BHS Access Award!

Their dedication to equestrian access shines through in their recent Centurion Village development in Leyland, where they partnered with BHS and Ulnes Walton Bridleways Association to create over seven kilometres of multi-user routes and install Pegasus crossings, showing the importance of inclusive equestrian planning ๐Ÿค

We have a number of wonderful key speakers, including Janice Kirkpatrick, talking about rediscovering a horse from the past with a very bright future. ๐Ÿ’ซ

Serendipity caused Janice to rediscover a horse from her childhood, which turned out to be a Trojan horse. This horse from the past has a very bright future, for its own kind and for dreams using zero carbon energy. Clydesdale Horses have widened Janiceโ€™s perspective about how to โ€˜doโ€™ economic development, place-making, heritage, skills, education, wellbeing, horsemanship, and transport. In saving the Clydesdales, we save many other things, including ourselves. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

๐Ÿด You never know until you try ๐Ÿด
On Thursday 31 October, the BHS North and West Kent committee ran a brilliant โ€œhave a goโ€ morning for Kent County Councillors. ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿผ

The event was organised by Access and Bridleways Officer, Anne Rillie, with the aim to give councillors the opportunity to find out about the local equestrian community and the challenges in accessing off road riding, as well as the chance to meet some of the lovely horses at Squirrells Riding School and have a ride. ๐Ÿด

It was a great morning with positive discussions. Thank you to Bryan Sweetland, Clair Bell, Neil Baker, and Andrew Kennedy for taking the time to come and meet us. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

A huge thank you to Anne Rillie and Hayley Squirrell for making it possible. ๐Ÿฅฐ

๐Ÿฅณ Access Award Winner ๐Ÿฅณ

On Friday 1 November, Access & Bridleways Officer, Anne Rillie, went to Kent Wildlife Trust in West Kent, to present them with one of our BHS Access Awards. The award was for willingly agreeing to upgrade a footpath (MR20 and part of MR23) to a bridleway, then volunteering to upgrade another piece of footpath (more of MR23) to bridleway to make an especially useful link. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Kent Wildlife Trust have been generous to horse riders for a long time; in 1992 the Trust entered into an agreement with Kent County Council and local horse riders to allow horses to use Footpath MR20 and a small part of MR23 along the south side of Burham Down Reserve, connecting two byways. ๐Ÿ’š

The permitted path was so little trouble that, over the years, the Trust forgot about it, but riders continued to enjoy it. ๐ŸŽ

When, in 2021 representatives of the British Horse Society asked if this use of this path could be formalised by dedicating it as bridleway, Kent Wildlife Trust not only agreed to this, but offered an additional length of MR23 to connect to Common Road Blue Bell Hill. ๐ŸŒณ

๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป Thank you again to Kent Wildlife Trust for the continued support and contributions.

With the Access and Safety Conference just round the corner, we will be sharing a sneak preview about what our fantastic speakers will be talking about. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป

Joining us on the day will be Claire Alldritt, telling us about how back in 2022, she travelled over 1,000 miles through the Highlands with her two horses Yogi and Swift. Join us to learn how and why, as Claire shares tales from the trails, and a long riderโ€™s perspective of equestrian access in Scotland. ๐Ÿด

Public Consultation proposal for a new National Park in Wales ๐ŸŒณ

In its Programme for Government (2021-2026), Welsh Government sets out its intention to designate a new National Park in Wales based on the existing Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or AONB (now known as a โ€˜National Landscapeโ€™). If established, it would be the fourth National Park in Wales, and the first since 1957. ๐Ÿž๏ธ

The 10-week public consultation period on the proposal for the new National Park has begun, running from 7 October to the 16 December.

๐ŸŒŸ Brilliant volunteer awarded for her life's work๐ŸŒŸ

On 22 October, one of our longstanding access volunteers and committee members, Sue Rogers, received the recognition she deserves and was presented with a Life Achievement Award by the Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland, Dr Caroline Pryer. The occasion was the final meeting of the year of the Northumberland Joint Local Access Forum (JLAF). ๐Ÿ†

Sue has been involved in access for over 30 years working tirelessly to improve rights of way for equestrians, by getting innumerable problems addressed and reclaiming miles of lost routes, expanding the rights of way network and making the avoidance of roads more feasible. ๐Ÿด๐ŸŒณ

JLAF members celebrated with guests with a splendid buffet and a fabulous cake! ๐ŸŽ‚

On Saturday 2 November, Bromley Bridleways Access Group (BBAG), organised a morning clearing the overgrown permissive bridleway at Old Hill/Shire Lane, Bromley. ๐Ÿ˜Š

It was an enormous success, with all volunteers working hard cutting back hedges, this work will make a real difference to all users. ๐ŸŒณ

๐Ÿ“Back of Ecton to Wetton Mill in the Peak District National Park

๐ŸดBHS Access & Bridleways Officerโ€™s Christine Harding and Viv Gray and BHS Access Field Officer, Wendy Bannerman, liaised with National Trust officer David Ward to identify the best design for a new gate to make this beautiful route more accessible for equestrians and other users.

๐ŸŒณOn 4 November, all those involved met on site with two local riders Cris Milton, and Sarah Reeds, with their horses Millie and DD. Sarah said that it makes a โ€œmassive difference to me and my businessโ€ providing horse and rider holidays.
Cris said โ€œit was wonderful to try the new gate. After my horse was injured, I have been more cautious of gates. This is a local loop ride for me, and I will bring others to ride with me now.โ€

๐Ÿ‘๐ŸปThe improvements, supported by the BHS Gate Fund, have opened over 1.8km of riding from Back of Ecton to Wetton Mill in the Peak District National Park. Thanks to all those who have worked together for the success of this project.

๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป A bridge on Kirby Bridleway 12 has now been reopened to be enjoyed by users thanks to a BHS Access and Bridleways Officer who reported that it was out of repair. Nottinghamshire County Council Rights of Way have replaced the broken deck planks, and the bridge is now ready for use!

๐Ÿถ Oyster the Lucas Terrier (pictured) went along to the bridleway to inspect the works!
