Today I'd just like to give a shout out to fellow artist Helen Bradbury, who has a lovely shop, The Graphite Gallery Cumbria, in Keswick. Steve and I popped in earlier this month and found a treasure trove of art, art materials, rocks, yarn, pottery, books on geology, candles, curioes and collectables and even wool fat soap, all with a local Cumbrian theme! And it was lovely to get to chat with Helen, who's impressive range of artistic skills would be seriously intimidating if she wasn't such a very lovely person! Thanks! Do you enjoy days out that get you in the mood for Christmas…? Last year I found myself a cracking one! Steve and I headed up to Keswick driven by my yen to see the "Santa Splash on Derwentwater". It's basically a bit of a PR exercise for Keswick, in which teams from local businesses dress up as Santas and elves and take to the chilly waters of Derwentwater for a rather shambolic canoeing race. It was absolutely hilarious! Some of the boats just went round and round in circles, till the competitors worked out that they needed to paddle on both sides of the boat! Several boats hadn't worked out what the course was, and there was a fair amount of squealing coming across the water as novice paddlers struggled to round the marks! The same team of competent canoeists won as the previous year, but the large crowd of onlookers appreciated the efforts and spirit of all those who braved the cold lake to take part in the spectacle! And I'm sure the various businesses and Visit Keswick the Lake District, the local tourist board, really appreciated the chance to get some cracking promotional shots!
