Anybody who comes here on holiday and then gets into difficulties on the fells is entirely dependent on the amazing volunteers of Mountain Rescue. They’ve been filmed for a year for a Channel 4 series called Lake District Rescue. Give it a watch; it’s so interesting!

A four-part TV series captures the work of mountain rescue teams in the Lake District.

In the private Wildlife Garden of our property The Byre, we put owl boxes up last year and to our absolute delight we now have a Barn Owl living in one. These are relatively rare; we’ve never personally seen one in this valley before and now our Byre guests have the pleasure of seeing one 😁

If you’ve stayed with us this year you will know that we have been making a wildflower meadow! Although we are novices on a steep learning curve who didn’t realise how hard it would be, this is how the meadow’s first year has gone …
We started with the 20m x 20m patch of land next to the parking area ~ it comprised a jumble of rotten trees, overgrown brambles, a very deep hole used for bonfires and an old tarmac drive.
In March we cleared and levelled the site, and also planted a privet hedge around it.
In April we had a truck load of stone delivered and a dry stone wall was built ~ we then put in a gate with an arch over and planted rambling roses each side.
In May we spent days raking off surface stones ~ we had so many we needed a skip to remove them. We also did much weeding out of brambles, dock leaves and grass that started to appear through. At the end of the month we were ready to seed it all with Yellow Rattle (to fight the grass) and perennial flowers. It was optimistic to plant so late, normally it would be Autumn, but we chanced it and had a very rewarding first Summer with so many flowers coming up.
During September/October, having reached the end of the ‘meadow year’ we started the job of strimming it all back to ground level, giving it a short while to drop any seeds, then raked it all away ~ you can’t leave it to compost on the surface as the soil would become too fertile for wildflowers. This process had to be repeated 3 times and was backbreaking ~ we are musing on borrowing some sheep next Autumn!
We have just completed the cycle by reseeding the perennial flower seeds in patchy areas, and adding in annual flower seeds too to give more variety next year. Along the way we have also planted 11 trees ~ hawthorns, flowering cherry and crab apples. So now it’s just a matter of waiting till Spring when hopefully it will all start blooming. In the meantime we are already enjoying the wildlife ~ the resident pheasants are enjoying the seeds, a pair of red-legged partridges spent several weeks living in the privet and a sleepy owl was photographed chilling on the fence
