Did you know? Kymer's Canal, Kidwelly was the FIRST Canal of any length to be built and operated in Wales!

It was built by Thomas Kymer from 1766 to 1768 to carry Anthracite Coal to the coast for onward sailing by Coastal Ships. The Canal began life as Kymer's Canal in 1766 and linked pits at "Pwll y Llygod" to a dock near Kidwelly.

The Tramway Bridge at Pwll y Llygod which spans the Gwendraeth Fawr is noted as being one of the oldest Bridges of its type in the world. The Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales notes that it is the oldest railway bridge in Wales and the "second or third oldest in the United Kingdom, and the world, and so its importance is considerable". (Source BBC News).

Kymer's dock at Kidwelly continued to be used for the export of coal by coasters for another 50 years. It was used as a rubbish dump during the 1950s, but together with a short section of the canal was restored in the 1980s. A few of the structures of the canal can still be traced in the landscape, and the route of the now closed railway can be followed for most of its length.

ROLLERMAN, BEHINDER, DOUBLER, SHEARER & OPENERS

What do those words mean to you?

Kidwelly Industrial Museum houses the only surviving tinplate works in Britain, a number of processes were undertaken at the works.

Across Britain; in tinplate works up and down the country, these words all formed part of the exciting and highly skilled process that made quality tinplate - all starting in the Hot Rolling Mill.

👷‍♂️🔨👷‍♀️

Here's a brief overview of THE PROCESS all starting in the "Hot Rolling Mill!"

• The ROLLERMAN would seize hot bars of Iron or Steel with tongs and insert it into a roller.

• The man on the other side of the roller was the BEHINDER who would catch the bar as it passes through.

• Next; after the bar had been repeatedly rolled by the ROLLERMAN, the DOUBLER would fold over the plate and squeeze the folds in the squeezer!

• The SHEARER then trims and cuts the pack to the size of the customer’s order. The SHEARER used shears with help from the first and second HELPERS.

• The eight black-plates in the pack were then separated by OPENERS.
