The Isle of Arran is often described as Scotland in miniature as it really does have a bit of everything from mountains, to beaches, to woodland as well as some great food, drink and historic sites to visit. Discover this enchanting scottish isle in the 1st comment

We all enjoy these kinds of lists, but how many have you completed on Arran? My personal favourite is undoubtedly number 3, and the great thing is that with Arran's 'hail and ride' buses, you can walk parts of it and use the bus to travel to and from your destinations.

Want to know why Arran milk tastes so good? Then here's 6 reasons for starters. Check out the list in the cottage of vending machine locations across Arran, where you can fill your glass milk bottle.

What makes Arran Milk so different from shop bought milk? 🥛

🌱UNHOMOGENISED
The less processed nature of our milk gives it extra creaminess leaving a lovely layer of cream sitting on top of the milk as the fat particles settle, simply 'shake it' to disperse before opening.

🌱GENTLY PASTEURISED
Gentle pasteurisation kills any bacteria whilst retaining delicious flavour.

🌱LOW FOOD MILES
Our fresh milk is uplifted 3 times a week from Tigheanfraoch Farm in Blackwaterfoot - just 11 short miles from our Dairy in Brodick where we pasturise the milk. Lower food miles help to reduce Arran's carbon footprint.

🌱GLASS BOTTLES
While our branded refillable glass bottles keep your milk fresh, they've also helped to remove thousands of plastic bottles from our community.

🌱MICROCLIMATE
Arran's unique microclimate provides the perfect conditions for our happy cows to graze and produce naturally thick and creamy milk.

🌱SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY
For every litre of Arran Milk sold we donate 5p to The Arran Trust. Following sales of 18,312 litres of Arran Milk in 2023, an incredible £915.60 has been donated to the Arran Trust this year, to support environmental projects to help protect Arran's stunning natural environment.

Wish we could change the weather at times, but isn’t it lovely when guests still manage to see and do so much even when the weather’s on the wet side. ...and of course when it's wet that's when you can see the wonderful waterfalls (Eas Mor and Glenashdale) on Arran at their best.

Now aren't these amazing photos of the sky? If you enjoy stargazing and want to see aurora, why not download the free Aurora Watch UK to receive alerts so you'll know when they may be visible. These photos were captured by one of our lovely neighbours by the cottage earlier this week around 11.30-12am. A mobile phone was used, and some of the aurora was even visible to the naked eye.

If you're looking for a unique, free and different activity on Arran, then the Arran Animal Rescue & Sanctuary is always seeking volunteers. All ages and abilities are invited to spend an hour or two with their delightful residents (including owls, otters, sheep and the resident zorse), assisting with tasks like weeding and cleaning around the enclosures. Simply message Diane via https://www.facebook.com/ArranAnimalRescue, and it's only 6 miles from the cottage.

I just had to share this wonderful review. The welcome pack, with local treats, allows us to support local businesses. Additionally, there's a craft honesty box where all contributions are donated to a local charity, and naturally, our guests adored Arran. ❤️

Something to keep an eye out for, I wonder where Susan visited? ...and what lovely sentiment 'the most beautiful place on the planet'.

Filming the last in the series of Grand Day Out this week - it might be the last episode ever who knows! Ending the series in the most beautiful place on the planet, the Isle of Arran. Can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather show off to the world. I love it. This is a photo of my amazing crew on a rather bumpy ferry. Superstars each and every one of them.

Love from Susan. x

Came across this informative article for any guests planning to cycle round Arran. Just a tiny amendment that the Velo cafe is no longer open as The Lagg 1791 hotel is under new ownership, though the hotel still serves good food I hear!

If you're after some ideas as to what to do with the family on Arran then this article's for you. We're so lucky that Eas Mor with the amazing Forest of the Falls cafe, beautiful waterfall, and the hidden library is within a half a mile of the cottage. There's also Kildonan about a mile away with the dinosaur foot print, seal colony and lovely beaches, oh and also Arran Simply Thai.

Dubbed ‘Scotland in miniature’, the “enchanted isle” of Arran is a magical playground for children, with its mysterious stones, fairytale waterfalls and dinosaur footprints

What a beautiful view, and do you recognise those islands? The main one with the lighthouse is Pladda after which the cottage was named. The toblerone shaped one is Ailsa Craig famous, for its common green granite used to make curling stones.

Well now all the excitement of fun week is over, we can all take time to enjoy summer (!!) and relax…. And I doubt there is a more beautiful place to relax! How lucky are we?

We enjoy reading every review and every piece of feedback, and last month a guest had politely mentioned that the cottage sign was almost hidden, and in truth it was literally on its knees due to some recent gusty weather. So here we have the new sign produced by our lovely neighbour Helen, of Bella Boo Cards. How pretty is that!

What an honour for Arran to be recognised as one of the 'must visit' things to do for those holidaying in the UK. Lots of ideas here for those who haven't been, though I'd also recommend visiting beautiful Eas Mor (forest walks and the unforgettable, unique Forest of the Falls cafe), only half a mile from the cottage.

The Isle of Arran, located off the west coast of Scotland, has been hailed as a must-visit for UK staycationers, and it's not hard to see why.

We sincerely hope our guests don't require the services of this wonderful charity (Arran Mountain Rescue) during their stay, but what a great way to support a local charity, support a local business (Seagate Brewery) and enjoy a refreshing ale brewed on Arran.

Following the success we had supplying bespoke beers for The Arran Mountain Rescue Team 60th anniversary party, you can now get The Goatfell Rescue Pilsner Ale abv 5% exclusively from Arran Active. All profits go towards their very worthwhile charity fund. Initial small batch made in limited quantities, get yours now... Cheers Bella Boo Cards and Helen Nelson for finished label design.

If you're lucky you may see otters on Arran, though please observe them from a distance.

If you’re lucky enough, you’ll see an otter whilst in Kildonan. I was lucky enough to see a mum and her cubs yesterday, they were playing in the sea for nearly an hour. One mistake made is assuming these otters are Sea Otters. However whilst they do swim and feed in the sea they are not sea otters, they are Eurasian Otters, found across the UK in rivers as well as by the coast. The genuine Sea Otter is a different species found off the west coast of North America.

Arran is a stunningly beautiful island throughout the entire year and we're drawn to it for may reasons, however for mountain and bmx bike enthusiasts did you know Arran will soon be home to Scotland's first split line pump track? About 9 miles from the cottage.

The forest trails that cross Arran can often be over looked, however they're great walks and ideal for picnics. This one starts at the small car park on your left, within a few miles of the cottage when driving to Whiting Bay. However there's others near to the cottage such as if you park up as you enter Kilmory (about 5 miles from the cottage), and follow the road up to the Kilmory workshop wood & pottery. After you've popped in then keep going along the track, past the forests there's then a circular walk back down to the main road.

If you've been coming to Arran for a long term you may recognise this building, and may even have stayed in it years ago when it was run as a guest house by the lovely couple who operated the speed boat tours around Holy Isle. More recently you may well have passed it on the circular walk from the cottage to see the seal colony.

Another trip down memory lane…. This time the old photo is of shore road to West Kildonan, and what used to be Kildonan Stores. A walk down the track now is a lovely stroll, and scenery and wildlife is worth it, but for the nearest pint of milk you now need to head to Whiting Bay! Sadly, the stores closed a while back - leaving Kildonan without a small shop - however we have plans to extend the hall and create a new community shop. Check out our website for plans: www.kildonanhall.org

At Pladda cottage we believe it's often the little things that make a difference so being a crafter, decided to introduce a craft honesty box in the cottage with all donations going to a local charity or a charity that directly benefits Arran. If our guests like the idea we'll do it again next year.

As we're a relatively new small business we really, really appreciate it when guests take the extra time to leave such lovely online reviews, which help to spread the word about our little cosy cottage. We did anticipate a more thorough clean may be required after the 3 little pups, however with lovely guests like these the cottage was left immaculate and we'd very much welcome them back.

Arran really does have such beautiful wildlife, which is always best observed from a distance. Please keep away from any roped off areas on beaches, so we can protect our nesting birds.

Whether you're looking for a first night (Saturday) or last night (Friday) treat we can't recommend Arran Simply Thai highly enough. Lovely couple who run it and the food is so fresh. Completely authentic Thai food and only a mile from the cottage down at Kildonan shore, next to the village hall. Please pre-book to avoid disappointment.

Here's our menu for Friday 31st May and Saturday 1st June. We're open from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m, and we recommend you pre-order your meals in advance by sending us a DM. Many thanks, the Arran Simply Thai Team🙏
