Paper Bird Island provides a welcoming space where you can enjoy the simple pleasure of creativity. We stock a wide variety of papier mâché items such as boxes, animals, decorations, masks and so on. We charge a studio fee when you book (£5 for under five year old’s, £7.50 for 5’s and over). We then charge per item (starting at £2) which includes however you wish to decorate it. We have paints on

the tables, a big chest of gorgeous découpage paper, a coloured sand table. We also offer extra decorations such as paper flowers, feathers and bows to add a finishing touch (25p each)

We also sell creative kits and art materials, gifts, cards, prints and gift wrap.

Hey folks, Here are some lovelies from the end of half term week and their joyful creations. I love that the space has now been used and infused with creative energy and feels more homely. Splatters of paint and glue which adds to the character of the place. Seeing it come alive fills me with so much joy.

I’ve had to have a few days off social media due to the toddler/work juggle frying my brain. It’s a different kettle of fish setting up a business this time and I am learning to be more patient and kind to myself for having to wait longer for ideas to manifest.

Plans are hatching for term time offerings and I’m really looking forward to be able to serve them up. I just have to remember that it’s a marathon not a sprint. Watch this space ❤️

✨️ Help Us Create a Vital Hub for Local Families! ✨️

Since the closure of Kingsbridge’s children’s centre in 2016, parents in our community have struggled without easy access to consistent support. Shockingly, 1 in 5 new mums and 1 in 10 new dads experience mental health challenges during pregnancy and in the first year after the birth of their baby, and only 1% of women are breastfeeding at 6 months with lack of support often cited as a reason why many stopped before they really wanted to. Yet, across the UK, over 1,000 children’s centres have closed, leaving families feeling isolated and without vital resources, particularly those living in rural locations such as ours.

The MotherBorn Collective CIC is on a mission to change that! We’re creating a welcoming space where parents can access infant feeding support, peer guidance, equipment hire, nearly new maternity, nursing and baby clothing, and more. A space where every expectant and new parent feels seen, heard, and appreciated 🩷

With your help, we can build a nurturing, inclusive hub for every young family in Kingsbridge and the surrounding area.

After school slots are normally available every week on a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 3.30-5.30 pm during term time. A few months ago…I don’t even know when…I started on a new Paper Bird Island…keeping it fairly under wraps, slowly chipping away in my child-free time and sometimes with my little one in tow. It has often felt painfully slow going. But finally it’s about time I open the doors and show you what me and some other awesome humans have helped create. I really hope you like it. So tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday (10-4) I invite you to come and see the space 🤩and if you like, make a paper bird card to hang inside. They’ll be no bookings this weekend, just walk-in and no charge as we’ll populate the island with your creations. Session bookings will be available from Monday. Our new address is right next to the Harbour bookshop on Mill street, Kingsbridge. Please note that there is one little step to get up to the ramp and no space for a double pushchair. For those of you that don’t know…we have BIG news!

Coming soon to Mill Street in Kingsbridge is a new Paper Bird Island sit-in space ❤️ There are still lots of things to do before opening so before you ask, I don’t have an official opening date for you yet, but I promise to keep you posted. It’s been a bit of ride but we’re almost there! and we can’t wait to welcome you to make some lovely memories.
Our shop on Thorning Street, Salcombe will continue to be open on Saturdays 11-4 with lovely Alisha and during half term on most days of the week.

Ever since opening I have been tinkering with the layout to maximise the small space we have. I’ve had Roger the carpenter on hand to adjust things which has been invaluable and he has been great to work with from start to finish. That’s if it’s ever truly finished! So when we redesigned the sand table there was more wall to paint and I finally got around to it. FYI we are open most days for either one, two or three sessions during the Christmas hols except for Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Go to our booking page for exact times. The online booking system is really easy to use it you can come in and book. You pay a studio fee (£7.50 for 5 yr olds and above, £5.00 for under 5’s) and then for your item when you come in. Item prices start at £2.00.
