SPECTACULAR ROCKFACE IN THE DALES

Malham Cove is an awe-inspiring, geological surprise, in the green heartland of the Yorkshire Dales.

Towering 80m high, this amphitheatre-shaped cliff, formed from limestone rock is an easily accessible attraction via a footpath from the village of Malham that’s also suitable for pushchairs and mobility scooters.

Of the many notes of trivia that go with Malham Cove, the location featured in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.

SPURN MIGFEST 2024

Another successful Spurn Migration Festival took place over the weekend, with a few hundred turning up to enjoy an exciting programme of activities, from Friday through to Sunday evening.

This annual festival to celebrate and observe bird migration at Spurn, began in September 2013, and has continued to grow year on year. Today, the festival is jointly staged by the Spurn Bird Observatory Trust (SBOT) and the BTO British Trust for Ornithology (BTO).

This year’s Friday night, keynote speaker was the distinguished Swedish ornithologist, Lars Svensson.

TTDIY was there, making a short video of the event, which will be published on our YouTube channel soon – be sure to check it out.

AND WE’LL ALL GO TOGETHER…

The North York Moors turn a spectacular purple at this time of year, when the heather flowers burst into bloom.

August and September is usually the time to experience this breathtaking sight, along with the gentle hum of honeybees, damselflies, moths and butterflies.

These pictures were captured just south of Goathland, near the RAF Fylingdales radar station.

A 199-YEAR-OLD WHALE STORY

There are historic English country houses open as tourist attractions all over the country, however, Burton Constable Hall in the East Riding of Yorkshire boasts a rather unusual exhibit that sets it apart.

Located in one of the barns is the impressive skeleton from a large 18-metre bull s***m whale which was found to have stranded itself on Tunstall beach, 14km away on the Holderness Coastline, almost 200 years ago, back in April 1825.

In those early 19th century days, the large skeleton was put on display, amazing the general public of the time. The crowds who turned out to view the giant whale bones inspired American novelist, Herman Melville, to write about the scene in his famous book, Moby Dick.

WHAT A DAY!

So, Humber Street Sesh 2024 was yesterday, and what an amazing day out in Hull! Music, atmosphere and weather all combined perfectly.

For our first-ever Sesh we were assigned the Cuban Pete’s stage to cover with fantastic music all the way through. Over 3,000 photos to sort through now, going to take a few days, but really chuffed with the shots we got and looking forward to sharing them soon.

Here’s a taster, The Froot on at 9pm last night.

WITHERNSEA PIER TOWERS

Built almost 150 years ago, these castle towers were the grand gateway onto a pier that reached more than 1,000 ft across the beach and out to sea.
Sadly the pier never lasted long. Storm damage as well as boats colliding with the structure, meant less than 25 years after opening only the pier towers remained standing, as can be seen today.
You will find the seaside town of Withernsea in the East Riding of Yorkshire, 15 miles from the city of Hull.

JANET’S FOSS

This beautiful little waterfall is found approx. 1.2 miles along a hiking trail that begins in the village of Malham, in the Yorkshire Dales.

The footpath makes its way first around meadows, and then through woodland following the Gordale Beck. In summer the smell of wild garlic is very strong as you pass through the wood.

The pool at the bottom of the waterfall is popular for swimming and the surrounding area is good for relaxing and having a picnic.
Janet’s Foss can be visited as part of a circular hiking route that also takes in Gordale Scar and Malham Cove.

SOUTH LANDING
South Landing at Flamborough Head is a local Nature Reserve, just over 3 miles north-east of Bridlington.
The shingle and pebble beach and surrounding area is great for a family day out, especially when the tide is out. Dogs are welcome.
There’s also walking trails along the cliff tops leading to Flamborough Head lighthouse (2 miles) in one direction, and Bridlington in the other.
