🇬🇧 The eruption site is NOT at all a safe area! New erupting fissures/craters can open up without much notice. The orange area on this map: Stay out of it!

🇮🇸 Gosstöðvarnar eru ALLS EKKI öruggt svæði! Nýjar gossprungur/gosop geta opnast án fyrirvara. Appelsínugula svæðið á þessu korti: Haldið ykkur utan þess!

🇬🇧 The summer is approaching, the snow in the highland is melting and travels there can soon be started… But not yet!
During the winter the highland roads are marked as impassable. In springtime their status is changed from impassable to closed for road protection.
The roads are normally very wet and muddy and often with some snow piles. They can simply be damaged if driven on too early.
The roads are then opened in summer with the date changing from year to year based on conditions.
Closed roads means that driving on them is illegal.
Map of closed roads is here https://umferdin.is/en

A new system has been installed in Reynisfjara (Black Sand Beach)

A new system has been installed in Reynisfjara (Black Sand Beach) 🌊

Sadly, a few tourists have already lost their lives in Reynisfjara due to extremly unpredictable and strong waves. 🕯❤️

In order to make the beach safer, a new system has been installed in Reynisfjara flashing green, yellow or red lights to reflect how the waves are and how visitors should behave to stay safe. Even though it flashes 🟢green🟢 (low hazard), you can always expect sneaker waves; very unpredictable and strong waves, even though the ocean looks calm. Large sneaker waves can occur very suddenly, every 10 or 20 minutes or so and in any weather. The waves reach much higher up than previous waves, are very strong and can knock people down in the wet sand, preventing them from running back to safety. The downrush can then drag people out in the ocean wich is very cold. This only takes a few seconds making it extremly difficult to help people caught in the waves.
Never turn your back to the the ocean, stay far away and keep children near you.

If the lights on the sign flash 🟡yellow🟡 (medium hazard) the waves are even stronger. It's very important to follow the instructions on the sign, do not go into the yellow zone. Do not go to the cliffs at high tight and do not enter the cave.

If the lights on the sign flash 🔴red🔴 (high hazard) the waves are extremely dangerous. Do not go further than the sign with the flashing lights!

We hope this will help visitors stay safe and wish you a safe and pleasant time here in Iceland! 😊🇮🇸
