AMAZING HULL TOURS was created in 2013 to show the other side of Hull's history. It is run by Mike Covell, a well known local historian and Ripperologist, who has lived in Hull all his life was working full time at Machine Mart in Hull when he was struck down with a heart condition and signed off work in 2007, a week after his daughter was born. To pass the time he began reading and researching on

a daily basis and between hospital appointments he would sit and peruse books, magazines, and historical documents. He underwent two heart operations called "Radio Frequency Ablation" at Castle Hill Hospital, and after a fitness assessment was signed back to work in 2014. He enlisted in a scheme working with Sirius in Hedon, and the Department of Work and Pensions to create Amazing Hull Tours, with the business plans signed off in the summer of 2014, with a soft launch over Autumn 2014 and the company officially launching in 2015. Initially the company ran small walking tours and lectures, and began self publishing that year, but things soon sped up. Mike was offered a publishing contract, and also became a freelance writer with Reach PLC, providing written content for The Hull Daily Mail initially, with his first article being published on August 29th 2015. TV work also came in, and Mike had the opportunity to film with Most Haunted, Most Haunted Live, Paranormal Lockdown, Ouija Dicing With Death, WWII Treasure Hunters, The Bombs That Changed Britain, Infinite Monkey Cage, Killer Neighbours, Prime Suspect Jack the Ripper, plus appearances on BBC, ITV, and various other networks and shows. His work and research has been featured in numerous books and magazines, he has featured in local, national and international media, and lectured across Britain on both Jack the Ripper and Hull's history. AMAZING HULL TOURS will also offer group bookings, family friendly tours, wheelchair and mobility scooter friendly tours, and virtual tours covering all aspects of Hull's history.

Apparently there was some sort of tourism awards covering the region recently.

Once again we were overlooked despite being the only audio-digital-visual walking tour company in the area.

In October alone we ran 8 different tours in Hull multiple times, a dark history tour in Hessle three times, a dark history tour in Beverley, a local history tour in Sutton, a local history tour in East Hull, as well as 15 different lectures, presentations at the Horror Fest, and a weekly local history lesson in a college, but still we were overlooked.

Not a lot of people are aware that there was once a dog tax levied on dog owners. Many local residents refused to pay it and were often pulled before the Hull Police Courts.

Many, however, dumped their dogs into the waterways, drains, rivers and docks around Hull in protest.

12 shillings in 1866 roughly equates to approximately £35.50 a year.

On this day in 1988, lest we forget.

A massive fire broke out at Humbrol on Hedon Road in Hull.

Jennifer Powley, aged 17, was on a YTS placement at the plant at the time, and sadly died in the fire.

UK operations Manager Mr. Peter Bryson said: “Some sort of electric spark ignited vapours coming from a spillage of solvent. I am not able to say what caused the spark.”

Twenty nine engines and 150 firefighters from across the region fought the blaze which started at 4.20 p.m. It was reported that it was the largest fire in the region since the 1974 fire at Flixborough, and it was estimated that the cost would run into millions. It took firefighters two and a half hours to surround the fire and hold it, but it was not officially under control until 9.30 p.m.

Nearby streets were evacuated to St. Richard’s School, and Hedon Road was closed at both ends. Warnings were issued to the residents of Hull, and those on the south bank, to close doors and windows due to a release of toxic fumes, but it was stated that the threat level was mild.

A north-south wind dispersed the billowing smoke plume over the Humber

The following were treated at hospital:

Janine Gilfillan, aged 19, was removed to the burns unit at Pinderfields Hospital.
Helen Adams, 21, treated for shock
Michelle Smith, 17, suffered burns to her feet
Gilliam Gibbs, 28, suffered burns to her hands
Frank Norrie, 36, suffered burns to his hands and feet
Graham Walker, 32, was treated for shock and smoke inhalation

Images from The Hull Daily Mail, dated Thursday November 3rd, 1988, showing the aftermath of the fire.
