Then & Now: Le Grand Logis 📚

With its storied past, Le Grand Logis is thought to be nearly 300 years old. However, it’s recorded history begins in 1777 when the estate was acquired by a noblewoman, the sister of the local lord, who married another nobleman from the region.

Over the centuries, the house and its grounds passed through various hands until, in 1899, the Catholic Church purchased the property and transformed it into the village school. For decades it was filled with children’s chatter – it’s not rare to meet many locals who take pride in sharing their childhood memories of attending class within its walls – before it was sold, extensively restored and returned to its original purpose of a country home.

Today, echoes of its time as a school remain visible. The statue of the Virgin Mary adorning the facade, the old school bell, and the covered courtyards in the front garden all serve as charming reminders of its former role. The current owners bought it in February 2018 and updated it (sympathetically to maintain its character), making it the beautifully timeless home it is today.

Set into the hillside above the little coast road that meanders between two quaint Meganissi villages, Azur Retreat is where sea and elegance meet. As the plane dips on arrival into the south of Zakynthos, Sapphire waters and stunning Marathonisi island come into view. Rich in marine life – including the Loggerhead sea turtle - it’s one of the most important conservation areas in the Mediterranean. While beach names here might sound familiar, Gerakas for example, the further north you go the more discreet the treasures are. There’s Xigia, where the bright blue water is said to have healing powers, and hidden gems like Climati and Kremidi great for snorkelling in deep crystalline water.

Back towards the south, Zakynthos Town is a vibrant port and the island hub, where old sits contentedly with new. Bookended by the harbour and the ancient church of Agios Nikolaos tou Molou, the heart of the town beats down by the waterfront.
