The making of Diaskari Beach House, Crete: Part 2 🌾

In 2023, Graham and Yianna decided to embark on a new journey – a 10-month re-imagining and restoration of their cherished Diaskari to make it their home. A team of gifted local craftsmen have helped them realise their vision and make it their own; reflecting their life inspired by travel. And though the exterior retains the hallmarks of its rustic roots and the dramatic beauty of its location remains unchanged, Diaskari has undergone an extraordinary transformation to become a magical and utterly unique four-bedroom idyll, surrounded by spectacular landscaped gardens, complete with amphitheatre, stream, swimming pond and shepherd’s hut.

Though it is Graham and Yianna’s home for most of the year – and home to their two beloved cats, George and Ellie who remain in residence throughout the summer – they are delighted to share this special corner of Crete with Simpson clients once again.

The making of Diaskari Beach House, Crete: Part 1 🌾

Some 40 years ago, our Founder Graham and his wife Yianna threw a few essentials into their beloved Citroen 2CV and set off from London to Crete. Weeks later, and almost without knowing how, their first adventure along the road less travelled brought them to Diaskari in a remote and beguiling corner of southeast Crete. Here, on a promontory of rock overlooking a deserted sweep of beach, a humble wine, olive oil and grain warehouse captured their imaginations and etched a place on their hearts forever.

In the 1980’s Diaskari was converted into two simple semi-detached apartments which featured in the Simply Travel portfolio (swipe to see it in the 1999 brochure!). Graham and Yianna returned again and again to this beautiful spot to walk, eat, swim and drift off to sleep to the gentle rhythm of the South Cretan Sea. Stay tuned for Part 2 💭

Guests who have been lucky enough to spot a sea turtle in Kefalonia understand how magical it is to see them in their natural environment. Every year, sea turtles migrate to Kefalonia to forage and reproduce, but with human and natural threats to them and their eggs, volunteers are needed to protect them.

This year, we were honoured to support the important work of the Wildlife Sense team by donating a centrifuge to the First Aid Station in Argostoli harbour. A centrifuge offers a fast and reliable way to test the turtle’s blood and gain more information on their health; helping to understand if an infection is present and if the turtle is anaemic.

Chanel Comis, Wildlife Sense Program Director and Co-Founder said: “We are truly grateful to Simpson Travel for giving us a centrifuge that will allow us to take these values during rescue. As a threatened species that is conservation-dependent, it is paramount we do all that we can to help sea turtles in need."

A special thank you to our Kefalonia Concierge, Karen, for driving forward this donation and bringing our attention to such a deserving cause.
