Barnard Castle - 12th century castle only a short vintage bus ride away for Elm Lodge guests 🚍

HISTORY
🏰Set on a high rock above the River Tees, Barnard Castle takes its name from its 12th century founder, Bernard de Balliol. It was later developed by the Beauchamp family and then passed into the hands of Richard III.

FACILITIES
🌳Extensive lawns and a section of the grounds dedicated to sapling fruit trees. Plenty of room to run and play, ball games allowed but please be considerate of other visitors. Kites allowed.

🚗No car parking available at the site. Nearest parking (not managed by English Heritage) is located in the town itself. There is some 2 hours-free parking in the town, as well as pay-and-display parking in the central car parks. The nearest about 500 metres away.

🍦Cold drinks, ice-cream and selection of small snacks available.

🥪You are welcome to bring a picnic to eat in the grounds which have fantastic views over the Tees Gorge. There are some picnic benches on site and in the garden.

🚻One disabled/unisex toilet behind the shop.

🐕‍🦺Dogs on leads are welcome, as are assistance dogs.

🛁 5 of our 11 bedrooms come with private bathrooms containing a bath or a double shower. In addition, there are 4 shared bathrooms accessible from the hall and 3 shared toilets. No more queues!

Elm Lodge was built in 1895 by Mr Metcalf-Gibson. The house is a fine example of an “Art and Crafts” house. The entrance has a Victorian tile hall but Georgian “look-a-like” stone walls trying to copy the houses in Bath on the Royal Crescent 🏠

The wood panelling is not original to the house but is far older as it came from another house in the neighbourhood that was being pulled down - a Victorian method of recycling ♻️

You will see in the hall the cement patches where the central heating was put in and by that time the beautiful tiles were not valued.

Up until February 2020 the house has been a family home - first owned by the Metcalf-Gibsons, then the Nutters in the 70s, then the Harrison-Becks and now the Fosters.
