What’s on in the artists town of Kirkcudbright…..

Sir Henry Raeburn (1756-1823), widely recognised as Scotland’s foremost and finest portrait painter, takes his place in the pantheon of the very best in the acclaimed tradition of British portraiture. His portraits are as admired as those by Allan Ramsay, Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds, George Romney, and Thomas Lawrence.

From about 1000 known works, painted in his most prolific years from c.1780 to his death, Raeburn is celebrated particularly for his paintings of men. This exhibition will challenge that premise and show characterful paintings of women and examples from his very fine work illustrating children.
The exhibition includes approximately 40 works, drawn from both public and private UK collections. Amongst the latter – most from collections in southern Scotland – will be works never before seen in public.

This exhibition is on NOW during Kirkcudbright Galleries summer hours: Monday – Saturday: 10am – 5pm and Sunday: 11:30-5pm and runs until Sunday 29th September. Free entry but donations welcome.

Something a bit different for this page, but looking ahead to the Easter weekend and knowing that lots of us will be entertaining, I thought I would share a couple of fun (and easy) Easter pudding recipes I will be serving up. I cannot take the credit for the recipes and have tagged the Instagram accounts (which I love following and recommend you take a look!) they have come from. I tried making them as a test run last weekend and they went down sooo well, will definitely be making both again this weekend! Let me know if you try making one or both and enjoy! 🐣 😋 🐣

Today we celebrate Robert Burns birthday. Born 1759 in Alloway, neighbouring county to Dumfries and Galloway, he frequented South-West Scotland, and his final resting place is in Dumfries. He wrote The Selkirk Grace, one of his most famous poems, just a stones throw from both our properties, High St. and Union St., at the Selkirk Arms in Kirkcudbright. Why not come and explore Burns country yourself and visit some of his old haunts. Be sure to pop in for a drink or delicious meal at the and for all Burns enthusiasts a visit to the in Dumfries is a must.

We celebrate Burns Birthday with haggis, neeps and tatties, washed down with a dram 🥃 or two - delicious 😋! Who’s having haggis tonight?? Don’t forget the grace, see below!

Some hae meat and canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it;
But we hae meat, and we can eat,
Sae let the Lord be thankit.
