There is a wealth of wildlife to be seen and enjoyed, such as red and roe deer in the forest and hills. If you are lucky you can see the wild goats that thrive on the rocky slopes of the nearby hills.

In 2024 we had many lovely new guests arrive here at Ross Bay Retreat. We also welcomed back a number of our guests who come here time and time again.

It is important for us to get feedback from our guests about their stay at Ross Bay. At the end of each year we look back at the many great comments and positive guest reviews. This feedback helps us maintain our high standards we keep and that each holiday cottage is up to scratch and providing what even more our guests are expecting.

Here are a few of the comments and snapshots of what our guests have been saying in their reviews after their stay at Ross Bay.

Our high level of cleanliness, comfort and attention to detail come up a lot which is a testament to how the cottages are kept and maintained by our Ross Bay team. However, it is the wonderful views, ever changing landscape, the abundant wildlife and the homemade cakes that get a lot of the comments...

Love history, love castles. love Scotland? Then come and visit this photogenic castle with a very colourful past. Caerlaverock Castle is a moated triangular castle first built in the 13th century. It is located on the southern coast of Scotland, seven miles south of Dumfries, on the edge of the Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve.

A magnificently moody shot of Caerlaverock Castle. This triangular fortress is an absolute must-see on your next visit to the South of Scotland!

Ross Bay Retreat Holiday Cottages

Ross Bay Retreat is a self catering holiday cottage business that was set up alongside the working farm at Ross Bay back in 2014. It was initially established with our 2 bedroom self catering ‘Creel Cottage’ in 2014, then followed by the 3 bedroom ‘Dairy House’ in 2015. ‘Cheeseloft’, a 3 bedroom cottage was fully converted in 2016 and finally ‘Byre By The Sea’ was completed in 2019, offering two bedrooms.

All our cottages have been refurbished to a very high standard and offer lovely views across the bay, they are all pet friendly and provide wood burning stoves for guests within a very comfortable home from home setting.

Our 500 acre working farm has prize breeding cattle herd and a breeding sheep flock. We grow cereals in Yorkshire to bring up here for winter feed and straw for bedding. There is a Biomass boiler system servicing all cottages which was installed in 2014. We have been increasing biodiversity here at Ross Bay with wildflower seeds / areas, and cleaning out / reinstating the old dam during the summer of 2019.

We are delighted to announce that we have been recognised as a Scottish Thistle Award Regional Finalist for 2019/2020, a massive thank you to all our lovely guests we have had staying with us over the last five years for their reviews and support.
