About Cochrane House
We’ve been visiting this part of Scotland for many years and have always encouraged friends to join us and experience the beauty of the region. Accommodation is

set over the first and second floor, with fantastic views over the historic late 16th Century ruins of MacLellan's Castle. Now in the hands of Historic Scotland, the castle is a popular visitor attraction, as is the War Memorial that stands in front of the castle. On entry, wind up the feature Georgian staircase and you'll find a light and airy landing with kitchen, spacious living/dining room and newly fitted bathroom with power shower. Continue to the top floor where you'll discover two bedrooms. Bedroom 1 has a double bed and dressing room. Bedroom 2 is set up with two single beds, although has the capacity to sleep three on single beds (two spare single beds are stored under the main single beds). We're also very lucky to have an outside space at the back of Cochrane House. It's accessed by turning left out of the front door and left immediately through a side gate that leads to the private and fully enclosed garden. Kirkcudbright is a great place to escape the day-to-day and disappear into the wide open spaces of the Galloway hills. Alternatively, scour the coastline and discover the many hidden beaches where your only company is the local wildlife. While you’re here also check out the wide range of local artisan foods. Castle Douglas is known as ‘the food town’ and is well worth a visit. All in all, there’s far too much to enthuse about so enjoy your stay and we hope you too share our passion for this wonderful part of Scotland.

Beautiful early autumn evening just along the coast from outside Borgue exploring Castle Haven which has been occupied for approximately 2,000 years! Now just sheep, cows and contentment to contend with.

Another new discovery! Beautiful walk from the centre of Newton Stewart. It's Walk 7 in Newton Stewart Walks/Gateway to the hills: Penkiln Burn and Cumloden Deer Park, published by Walkfest - Newton Stewart. At just under five miles it's a very gentle walk and takes in some beautiful scenery, particularly alongside Penkiln Burn. Towards the end we took a diversion into Monigaff Church, exploring the graveyard (which was fascinating). The floor of daisies in the old church was a treat.

A lot has changed over the last two years. Take this place Laggan. We used to visit for outdoor activities but now it's a fantastic new restaurant perched on the top of the hill off the A75 between Gatehouse of Fleet and Newton Stewart. Great place for varied selection of food and drink, with the added bonus of exceptional views of the Isle of Man and Lake District. The outdoor seating area is gorgeous. And the tray bakes? Well, say no more than it added to the waistline!

For all you civil engineers. Tongland Bridge, a delightful walk along the river from here, was designed by Scotland's greatest civil engineer, Thomas Telford (1757-1834). His first major bridge in Scotland, the arch has a span of 112ft, the largest span of all his masonry arch bridges north of the border.
I can't claim specialist knowledge, all this info was garnered from the plaque, on the bridge!

I think I say this every year but we really do have some of the most beautiful bluebell woods here! This is Barhill Woods, right on the doorstep, a lovely mixed woodland of broadleaves and conifer...bluebells and red squirrels!

Hello Facebook, long time no see! I’d fully intended to jump on and give a little update to our 2022 bookings but my Spring Fling brochure has been delivered so I’m a little distracted! 96 studios are taking part this year and if you’re looking for somewhere to stay for the duration we still have availability 😊

The Galloway Hoard is coming to Kirkcudbright…and so are the Vikings!

A warning to the people of Kirkcudbright! We have received intelligence that on Saturday 9th October a boat called the BEAR will herald a Viking invasion of the town. Our loyal Gallovidians will defend the town and retreat to hide the Galloway Hoard in Kirkcudbright Galleries (just in time for opening at 10am 😉). The Vikings will likely spend the rest of the day seeking the hoard, if you are questioned do not give us away!
