This weekend we are following in the footsteps of the 52nd Lowland Division at the end of WW2. Lt Peter Whites' epic read "With the Jocks" providing evocative detail and wonderful sketches. Based in delightful Roermond. Proof that the war goes on A LONG time after D-Day and even 8 months beyond Op Market Garden.

Just returning from a memorable week in Picardy and great to work alongside Gary Sheffield again.

From camouflage factories, to battle schools, from the 1st July through to November 1916, from April to August 1918, from cavalry, through tanks onto the emerging role of airpower and so much more along the way.

Can't wait for the next one.

A very moving couple of days with Suffolk Branch The Western Front Association. Yesterday we studied the 1918 actions around Villers Bretonneux and Amiens, including Kim Smiths Grandad, whose war came to an end at Damery Wood, 15 August 1918 with the 52nd CEF, he survived his wound to have 11 children!

Then today, on the 108th Anniversary of the opening of the Battle of the Somme, we focused on relatives of the group, including the story of the 11th Suffolks (Cambridge City Battalion) for Roger and the loss of Archie Middleditch, a 19year old subaltern in the 2 Essex and relative of Martin who is buried in Serre No2 Commonwealth War Graves Commission a long but rewarding and emotional day.

Battle Honours back on tour with Suffolk The Western Front Association Branch Tour to Picardy, on our way to Amiens we stopped at Flexicourt where CliveandAli Harris described the BEF Camouflage & Sandbag Factory before the IV Army Battle School comparing Siegfried Sassoons memories of his time there and the instructors alongside those of CSM Harry Betts DCM, MC, MM who as part of the 1/1 Cambridgeshire's, formed the permanent staff in late 1915

Today we studied the Aisne, September 1914 on the The Western Front Association tour. Including a visit to Vailly to hear the story of RSM Norman Macwhinnie DCM, MC, MiD, Medalle Millitaire of the King's Own Scottish Borderers and Thoedore Wright VC who blew bridges at Mons and saved them on the Aisne.

We also visited Pont Arcy, followed the Guards through Soupir and ended at Vendresse where Stuart Davison is buried, this subaltern in the KRRC fell leadingd his men into battle, from a fascinating family, his Granfather once won the Deeds to the Sandringham estate from the Prince of Wales in a card game!.

We ended with Jack Sheldon and CliveandAli Harris describing the fight for Cerny Crossroads from both the German and British perspective

Day One of the The Western Front Association tour to study September 1914 guided by Jack Sheldon and CliveandAli Harris we began studying the East Lancs actions at Saint Sauveur before heading to Nery and where David Hill had a fascinating medal group to the Queens Bays and Clive bought the pocket diary of F Nicholls, 'L' Battery RHA. After a through study of the 'affair at Nery 1 September 1914' he headed to lunch in Meaux and followed with a visit to French National WWI Museum. We ended the day at La Ferté-sous-Jouarre where Pulteneys III Corps crossed the Marne and the moving CWGC Memorial to the missing.

The 2024 In and Out Club Wine & War tour to Gallipoli is well and truly underway.

We started yesterday in the Helles sector with personal visits to Lancashire Landing, the Helles Memorial and Twelve Tree Copse, we then ended the day at Suvla Winery.

Today we began with a boat trip and moving commemoration over the wreck of HMS Triumph for John Mcanally who's grandfather served aboard.

After lunch we visited Lone Pine where Mark Outhwaites Great Grandfather served with the 23rd AIF before ending the day at the excellent Bengodi Winery, a couple of very memorable days.

A full day at Mons, including a special visit to St Aybert where the 1/Middlesex Regt made a successful defence on the Mons Conde Canal.

We also stopped to remember D-Day80 amd the men of the 'Big Red One' who liberated Mons after Normandy in late 1944.
