A very moving couple of days with Suffolk Branch The Western Front Association. Yesterday we studied the 1918 actions around Villers Bretonneux and Amiens, including Kim Smiths Grandad, whose war came to an end at Damery Wood, 15 August 1918 with the 52nd CEF, he survived his wound to have 11 children!

Then today, on the 108th Anniversary of the opening of the Battle of the Somme, we focused on relatives of the group, including the story of the 11th Suffolks (Cambridge City Battalion) for Roger and the loss of Archie Middleditch, a 19year old subaltern in the 2 Essex and relative of Martin who is buried in Serre No2 Commonwealth War Graves Commission a long but rewarding and emotional day.

Our Essex WFA Branch battlefield tour got underway for 2024 to study the Battle of the Frontiers, excellent Hotel in Liege and a superb tour of the almost intact Fort Lantin with the help of Albert, also to Fort Chaudfontaine which suffered a very different fate 13 August 1914 when the powder magazine was hit.

At the nearby cemetery we heard Paul Weaver talk about his Grandfather who served in the Belgium Army during the battle, being wounded twice.

03/10/2022

Final day on this year's National Western Front Association tour with Jack Sheldon, and we studied the Zeebrugge Raid in context with the wider events of April 1918.

Jack told the story of Herman Kunne, himself killed in the raid on the mole, who German accounts report 'slaying a Wing Commander Brock with his Cutlass'. Brock himself is listed on the memorial to the missing just opposite Kunnes grave.

We also discussed the efforts of Bermondsey boy Ed Lankshear, RN Fleet Boxing Champion who was a Lewis Gunner on HMS Vindictive during the raid, his brother was shot down at Passchendaele flying with the RFC and Edwin would go into be an ARP Warden during the London Blitz.

The Zeebrugge Raid was undoubtedly one of the most fascinating chapters of the war, if heavily mythologised and used for propaganda purposes at a time we needed them most.
