☀️ SUNNY, CRISP AND COLD

We have got a forecast of sunshine and cool temperatures for a long as the BBC weather App lasts here at the Loch Shin Pods.

It's weather that really brings out the natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands landscape and always makes us want to go out for a walk...and keep walking.

Your breath visible as you walk and your face feeling the chill - while the rest of your body is wrapped up, warm and toastie.

For those seeking a more challenging walk, there is Ben More Assynt (998m) to the West, the highest point in the county of Sutherland.

And there are plenty of other fantastic mountain walks beyond Ben More Assynt too, with other highlights including Conival (987m) and Ben Klibreck (962m). 🏔

Importantly, all of our pods are stocked with a kettle for a warm drink when you get back. 🫖

🏊 WHERE IS LOCH SHIN?

We often get asked by visitors where we are situated in relation to the Loch itself.

Our pods are located to the north side of Loch Shin. The nearest village, Lairg, is 5 miles away, at the southern tip of the Loch.

There, you will find places to eat and drink, a good mix of shops, and plenty to see and do.

Loch Shin is the largest Loch in Sutherland at around 17 miles long and flows out into the River Shin.

The Loch itself offers many things to do from swimming to canoeing, while the surrounding area provides waterfalls, cycling routes and challenging walks up hills and munros.

In short, if you are active, there are plenty of things to do!

🚌 NC 500 TOUR... IN WINTER?

A post for hardy souls...

Travelling around northern Scotland and, in particular, the famed NC 500 route is a beautiful experience in the summer, spring and autumn months.

But why should the winter be any different?

There are still some amazing things to see and do. You just have to be prepared.

Here are five top tips...

✅ On the year's longest day (Dec 21st), there is only 6hrs 15mins of daylight, so bring games and books to keep you busy at night.

✅ Have a flexible itinerary. Sometimes, the wind and snow can be an issue and stop you doing the things you want to do. Have a back-up plan.

✅ Smaller hotels and accommodation may be shut because it's the off season so check before you travel.

✅ You may see red deer by the road side and seal pups on the beach. As always respect them and keep your distance. They may be territorial.

✅ Check your vehicle has everything it needs before setting off. Is everything working and topped-up? It's not a great place to break down.

Enjoy!

🌨 SNOWY CHALLENGES 🌨

Whatever the weather, our animals always give us that look which says...

"Hello...where's my food?" 🤣

But rain or shine...or snow...we make sure our guys and gals are well fed and watered.

Well... we aren't going anywhere in the car today are we?

Another job on John's list after the latest dump of the white stuff at the Loch Shin Pods, was the whack the snow off the top of the chicken coop before its weight brings the whole thing down... again!

Who would have thought fluffy white snow cold be so heavy?

It's a job John has grown to love this winter... 🤣😏

And if you think it;'s something you'll deal with further down the road...March...April maybe...just a warning, we tend to book up very quickly for those prime weeks when the kids are on school holidays.

😱 NORTHERN LIGHTS SPECTACULAR

Was anyone else out last night trying to get pics of the Northern Lights?

Apparently, it was a really good opportunity for anyone across the whole of the UK to see the aurora borealis in its full splendour.

We are very lucky up here in the Scottish Highlands to be in such a good position to see them at various parts of the year and we managed to get a couple of great pictures around the pods and the Croft last night.

We would love to see your pictures if you managed to get any good ones 👇

🎉 HAPPY NEW YEAR!

A massive thank-you from us to you, for all of your love and support throughout 2024.

It has been a wonderful year for the Loch Shin Pods with loads going on.

We have enjoyed some fun with our animals at the Croft and watched them grow into fine beasts - both big and small.

And we have really enjoyed meeting and looking after some amazing guests who have stayed with us for the UK and further afield.

Without you, we wouldn't have this business.

We hope you all have a wonderful 2025 and hope to see some of you in the next 12 months.

Happy New Year! 🎉🎊🪅🎈

🌨 A LOCH SHIN WHITE CHRISTMAS? 🌨

Up here in the Scottish Highlands, a white Christmas is never too far away from a possibility.

It has been a windy and mostly mild(sih) winter so far, so what are the chances of a drop of the white stuff falling from the sky on the big day?

When it comes, it certainly makes for more challenging effort to get all the animals warm and fed.

But we always make sure we do that...and take our camera out in the icy landscape when we do so.

The crisp and clean air is just gorgeous.

We'll keep you updated as the big day draws closer.

🔥 FIRE PIT WEATHER 🔥

We are blessed at the Loch Shin Pods with our communal fire pit which has provided the basis for many fun (and late) nights with guests wanting a chat and to share a drink.

And in the winter...it is 100% fire pit weather!

But did you know we also have personal fire pits for our pods. 🙌

So if you want a quiet evening with your other half - or you want to cuddle up with the kids, our pods' fire pits are perfect for a special evening you will remember for a long time.

Remember, we have fire wood for your pits and we have blankets for you to snuggle up in.

⛺ GLAMPING V CAMPING 🤔

They are called 'glamping' pods for a reason at Loch Shin.

We have all been camping before. Most of us are huge fans of camping too.

But some times, you just need to stay dry and warm when you go to sleep at night!

And that's why our pods are such a good bet for a winter break.

Cosy linen, hot showers, fluffy towels, a two-hob cooker and an in-room heater will all make sure that you do not get cold or wet if you come and stay with us.

Want a break with some mod-cons? Visit the Loch Shin glamping pods.

🥶 Our Loch Shin Pods Croft really is an amazing place for pictures in the winter.

No snow this time but a cold and frosty morning gave us the chance to take some snaps of the gang out and about.

The deer were playing their part in an eerie scene as the sun tried hard to break through cloud and early-morning mist.

Stan the stag always seems to know where the camera is! 📸

And the sheep....well, they were just hungry! 🤣

📸 PICTURE THIS...

😍 We love sharing pictures from the people who are good enough to take the time to post reviews on social media/booking sites.

🙌 So a huge thank-you to Katy, from the UK, who came to visit us last month and left this review on booking.com with a picture of the view from outside her pod on a beautiful autumn day.

"Comfy, cosy pods. Window by the bed is amazing as you can have a bit of fresh air running through. Amazingly clean. So quiet and peaceful, lovely view out of the front of the pod. Hosts were amazing, very hands off and not at all overbearing but there if you need anything at all. Location is very close to Lairg.

"Lastly, the animals. We're an adult couple in our 30s and let me tell you, having my morning coffee next to the highland cows was genuinely a highlight of my entire trip. I could watch them all day. Highly recommend and we plan to book when we're back up this way next year."

🐥🌨 'HEAVY' SNOW - IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE!

You know that snow that fell the other night?

It was very heavy!

And we don't just mean there was plenty of it....

John found the chickens under a pile of snow on top of the chicken run and a heavily wilting netting frame.

Cue a busy morning for John, firstly removing all of the snow and then, making the necessary repairs to the netting and frame to make sure our chickens are safe and sound.

It's all good and back to normal now and there's no need for our chucks to duck as they go about their daily business!
