👏As week three comes to a close, we press on with preparations for the new paintwork in Lodges 8, 9, and 10. Amidst the usual sanding and priming, we take a moment to bid a fond farewell to Oor Willie, who has watched over the kitchen of Lodge 9 for many years. The time has come for a fresh coat of paint, and with it, we say cheerio to a piece of the lodge’s history—making way for something new, but never forgotten.
Keep watching for more updates as week four kicks off, bringing fresh changes with new flooring being laid in a few of the already painted lodges. Exciting times ahead!

It’s a chilly one up here in the Highlands this morning! ❄️ But no matter the weather, some jobs just have to be done! 💪 Denholm Environmental Limited is on-site this morning. Not the easiest spot to access, but the team got it ! 💪 Work is now underway ensuring the septic tanks are cleaned and ready for another year. 🚛✅

💥.... and just like that we kick off week three of maintenance and renovations here at Kylesku Lodges! We’re incredibly grateful for the hard work of our team, with interior painting well underway and another three lodges starting the process today. Over the weekend, our local plumber put in great effort preparing our laundry for the commercial machine installation and making improvements to taps and showers across the lodges. A special thanks to Assynt Upkeep for their fantastic work in keeping the site looking its best. As always, we truly appreciate all the contractors on-site for their dedication and expertise—thank you!

Nice day chumming the dolphins, more footage in stories 🐬💙
Today was dolphin day…
The wild ones are back…
What a night… went out on our wee boat as it was such a calm sunny evening and suddenly we were surrounded by dolphins! And just before this we saw a pair of white tailed sea eagles soaring above… (captured on Stories) cannot believe our luck. Six years living on the NW and still we get blown away by this place 😳
It was a glorious Sunday but the roads were so busy…
These guys are on it… a reminder to us all to get outside and enjoy some fresh air whether we feel like it or not! Preaching to ourselves here and we ALWAYS feel better for it.
After a morning of wall to wall mist the view has reappeared …
First boat day of the year!
Changeover day and the gardeners are back ...
One minute it’s like this and then it’s full on blizzard - you can see the snow slowly heading up the Loch. Then the sun comes out again.... hey it’s Spring!
10 A frames on the untouched NW of Scotland, in Sutherland. Uninterrupted views over Quinag & Loch a Chàirn Bàin. The lodges are where rustic hideout and timeless natural beauty entwine. We have dog friendly lodges, and lodges can sleep up to 5.
How did we end up here?
With our two girls all grown up and our first grandchild en route, we decided in October 2015, rather impulsively, to search Google for campsites for sale. Up came ‘Kylesku Lodges’ and a stormy visit to the site a month later. We were blown away by the view and saw an opportunity to update the lodges with our eye for creativity and design. The pull of the ‘friendliest hotel in Scotland’ only a short walk away, and the chance to build a home and live in the wild weather of Sutherland, was just too intriguing to walk away. So we sold our flat and moved up from Edinburgh in July 2016, where Mike worked as a joiner and I was studying Textile Design at Glasgow School of Art.
As we approach our fourth season, we feel very fortunate to have met so many colourful and enthusiastic guests and been welcomed into the local community, with gifts of venison, lobster, gin and laughter. We've welcomed families, single travellers, groups of friends, celebrated artists, actors, film crews, groups of divers, photographers and walkers and the highlight of 2019 - our first wedding! There have been times where we have missed our family so much it hurts, but when they visit we climb hills, discover hidden waterfalls, walk along empty beaches and go out on our wee boat looking for seals and otters.
At heart we are problem solvers, we love the shape of the lodges but feel they would fit into the landscape better if clad with Scottish Larch. So we are aiming to have as many of the fronts of the lodges (that the weather allows) larched by Spring 2020.
Another exciting addition is the opening of Cath's studio/shop in April 2021. Since leaving Art School she was awarded a grant from Highlands & Islands Enterprise to develop her knitted blankets, cushions and scarves for use in the lodges. These will be available for sale from her studio and through her website, Cove (www.covedesign.net).
We want to share this amazing place with you and we hope you will come with your family, your friends or just yourself. Come and explore, breathe the freshest of air, switch off your phone and enjoy all the wildlife, views, hidden treasures and fabulous food. See you soon, Cath and Mike and the wandering sheep and stags (our live in neighbours)
