The summer has not been kind to the apple trees. Even the old faithfuls are struggling to produce fruit. However, the hydrangeas are full of colourful blooms including those that struggle each year. We also have an amazing fuchsia. Guests can take cuttings.

A very big thank you to our regular guests who been so supportive in achieving the minimum 182 nights booked per year as demanded by the Welsh Government. It is a move to target second homes but there are many of us who only have planning permission to let and cannot sell the property as a second home. Sadly, there are many great places and lovely people who are not going to make the target.

Dates available: August 8 - 11th, October ( except 5 - 12th ), November 9 - Dec 20th.

If you are new to this page or just viewing please contact me for details if you are interested in staying. We are offering a small discount for single person bookings and front line workers.

An update on Alfie. He is growing rapidly, eats loads, sleeps and plays........ what a life. Identity crisis..... is he a human, horse or cow; not seen sheep yet. He is quickly learning what he can and cannot do around the horses. Second jab this week and able to socialise from next Wednesday. Daily walks away from the house will start soon.

Thank ou for your comments about the loss of Maddy. It did not take long for 9 week old Alfie to appear. Talk about full time. He probably thinks his name is "No" or "No No No". If we have ever have time again we will update you on the adventures of Alfie.

Pt 2: A number of you may not be aware that we lost our dog Maddy to meningitis a few weeks ago. Many of you met her on your visits. Occasionally in life we cross paths with a person or animal that was extra special. Maddy was beautiful in mind and body. It started last year and we were advised it could return in 30% of cases. We hoped she was in the 30% that fully recover. Our gratitude to Downes Vets, Aberystwyth for their efforts to ease her pain.

Time to catch up. The first half of the year has been up and down. In this post we wanted to show you how the garden has developed. February into March saw the dafs and snowdrops. In April and May the primroses took over along with the wild poppies. In May the big old apple tree was in full bloom. The trees and hedges were slow to start this year but they suddenly burst into life in late April and the garden is now very green. It looks amazing. Squirrels, kites, woodpeckers, doves, crows, magpies ........ and so many types of small birds about.

Squirrels are hungry this month. They journey about 400 mts along a hazel hedge and cross the road on the high beech tree branches. They have become brave when we appear at the window.

The interesting weather continues. On one day last month we had snow, rain and sunshine within one hour and repeated several times during the day.

Gearing up for the new season but it seems nationally the world of holiday letting is low on bookings. Thank you to all those who have booked so far but especially to our regular guests. New visitors to this page can email for prices and offers.

The barn is a very gentle and relaxing place to stay. The area has much to offer for everyone. Over half of our guests have been before. Single guests feel comfortable. If you know of someone who is struggling and in need of a break let us know. We can adjust according to circumstances.

Thanks for the suggestion to post some internal photos for new people visiting the page. I forgot to say that we have signed up with "A Bit of a Break". It is a charity supporting breaks for people with terminal illness. No takers yet but it heavily depends on their physical needs.

Holly has been at again. Give her a camera and she disappears into the barn garden.

2023 was a very long and tough year. It was hard keeping up after breaking my leg and the barn was fully booked throughout the summer allowing us to meet the Government target of 182 nights for the second year running. We had 100% positive feedback from guests. The greater spotted woodpeckers have been with us for a number of years but this year was the first time we observed the offspring growing up. Thank you to John Tanner-Charles for supplying these pictures taken through the sitting room window of the female adult. They love the peanuts and boss the starlings.

Just a note that we have had an avalanche of bookings that have filled up the calendar until early September. If you are interested in reserving time for next year then let me know. I will not be publishing until December. I would check any reserved dates are still required before publishing.

From an earlier post we are still looking to support front line workers or anyone really struggling financially who needs a break.

At last some time to sit down. Snow drops are out so I will take some pictures. This photo is one of a number taken by Holly. The local bird life is very active around the feeding area.

A big hello at the start of 2023. We had such a busy year that something had to give but I promise to try harder to keep this site updated.

We reached five years of trading last Autumn. A big thank you to all our guests who have treated the barn with love and care. As a result the barn still looks the same but the garden has developed significantly so I will post some pictures.

The booking calendar for 2023 has finally been published this week on the site: West Wales Holiday Cottages/Gwelfryn Bach. If you are interested in booking then check availability on the website and contact us or you can book directly with the site.

A considerable amount of time has been spent looking at ways to lessen the ever increasing energy costs. We have absorbed much of the increases but also removed the charge on dog as the majority of our guests bring a dog.

These offers are not available through the booking website:
* Front line workers 5% discount with proof of identity.
* Two bookings during the year at a much reduced price for people who are struggling or looking for respite.
You can nominate others or yourself but we would seek verification.
Ask directly on "[email protected]".

"One of the best cottages we have stayed in! Rob (the owner) was on hand at all times if needed and very knowledgable about the area. The large garden was totally secure where we could let our dog wander freely with no worries. The lovely large lounge window overlooking the garden and bird feeders was great for watching the birds come and go…much more interesting than watching TV! The large kitchen was fully equipped with everything we needed. Lovely comfortable bed upstairs with plenty of space and lots of natural light and a good size walk in shower downstairs. Rob & Ali have clearly put a lot of thought into the planning and design of this fabulous renovation and a lot of hard work!!

There are fabulous walks a short drive away with many great trails which were perfect for our energetic Springer who needs loads of ‘off-lead’ exercise. The beaches were also lovely with beautiful small bays to larger beaches with miles of sand. Many beaches do have dog restrictions in place between May - September but this wasn’t a problem for us holidaying in October.

We can’t wait to be back again at Gwelfryn Bach!"

The Aeron Valley looks amazing in the Autumn. We recommend a less than ten minute drive from the barn to the walk/cycle track on the old railway line from Llanerchaeron House to Aberaeron. The Aeron River runs alongside the track. It takes about forty five minutes into Aberaeron, rest at the wonderful McGowans cafe and back to the car.

October already and we continue to be busy but have maintained closure days between bookings for covid safety. The leaves are just starting to fall and swallows travelling south. Dates available: 1-10 November and 21 Nov - mid December, early January - April. Christmas and New Year not available. Happy to take minimum two night bookings. Contact me through this site or GwelfrynBach@ yahoo.com. Hoping to have the 2022/23 calendar available by early November. Probably going to a six day week from next April to support the covid cleaning. You can give me provisional dates as soon as you want.
