📅On this day in 1973, whilst out walking his dog, James Marshall made a rather grizzly discovery! Construction of a new car park was taking place at Jubilee Tower, on the outskirts of Lancaster. The construction workers had disturbed what originally was thought to be two dug out boats. Further inspection revealed the finds to be the remains of a burial from around 600 - 700 A.D. The soil conditions meant only the deceased's hair and nails were left in the coffin, wrapped in a large shroud. The finds were eventually gifted to Lancaster City Museum by Lady Sefton, who owned the land it was discovered on. It is now on display in the museum's local history gallery and happens to be one of our favourite pieces in their collection! ⚰️
