Our lovely local town of Modbury feeling festive last night! The winter weather was perfect and brought out a fine selection of woolly hats. The City of Plymouth Pipe Band led the procession down the hill (and straight into the pub!)

Well this serves me right for being smug about blue skies and blue seas yesterday!

Beautiful sunset from the lambing paddock, unfortunately one or two of the local fox population agree! Old school trick of leaving a radio on as a deterrent, is there still an omnibus of the Archers on a Sunday? That should send them fleeing for the hills…

Here’s a typical Wednesday at Langston…

Starting with a morning walkabout in some of the nectar mix stewardship plots, crimson clover looking particularly stunning and full of bees 🐝 🐝

Our 30 acres of woodland creation, established in 2020 (during the middle of Covid!) finally benefitting from a much more benign and damp spring. The oaks are really coming to life.

New grain drier delivered and commissioned today, thanks to and a bit of imaginative tandem telehandler work

Another batch of breeding ewes gathered, sorted, loaded and delivered single handed by Holly, off this evening to pastures new a few miles away in Modbury

Cutting the footpaths across the farm, to avoid getting shouted at by the parish council 🙄😃

Helping out a friend and neighbour with some silage, in exchange for a nice cup of tea..

Contrary to popular belief - BBC, we’re looking at you - most farms in our area are fully invested in supporting wildlife. This is done quietly and without drama, by people who work with the land every day and appreciate what’s on their doorstep. This year alone we’ve committed over 40 acres of previously arable ground to various schemes including sowing wild bird food, nectar flower mixes and flower rich margins. Our grassland has minimal inputs, no artificial fertiliser, and has been overseeded with herbal keys which provide food and habitat for insect and pollinators. Most days we see hares, corn buntings, deer, skylarks, kestrels, otters and more.

You know those beautiful landscapes of hedgerows and patchwork fields?
Farmers made those.

Are we exceptional? Not at all. These practices have been carried out for years.

Farming - it’s not the problem.

Whilst not working his magic making improvements around Langston, the talented Matthew McCann has been busy furtling away in one of the barns creating this fabulous bespoke and totally authentic shepherd’s hut. We think she’s a beauty and apparently so did everyone else at yesterday’s (great as ever) Yealmpton Show, where he’s been taking commissions for more.
With thanks to Wakehams of Modbury, Sail 88,
Pepe Garden Furniture, BBC Radio Devon, Toad Hall
