It's raiding and pillaging season for our Vikings, meaning that unfortunately there will be no Vikings taking tours. The heritage centre will be closed from 12.30pm today, closed Tomorrow and Saturday, open Sun (4th), Mon 5th, closed Tuesday 6th, open Wed 7th, closed from 12.30pm on Thurs 8th and fully open from Fri 9th Aug.
Our Vikings apologies for any inconvenience, however they will be off having a ball, so don't really care ⚔️😁

Pre Battle of Largs

ON THIS DAY IN SCOTTISH HISTORY...

On this day on 1249 King Alexander II of Scotland dies on the Isle of Kerrera ...

Alexander attempted to persuade Ewen, the son of Duncan, Lord of Argyll (and King of the Isles), to sever his allegiance to Haakon IV of Norway. When Ewen rejected these attempts, Alexander sailed forth to compel him, but on the way he suffered a fever at the Isle of Kerrera in the Inner Hebrides.

The Hákonar saga Hákonarsonar records additional information, in that before attempting to invade the Isles, where Ewen held power, he was supposedly warned in a dream by St. Columba, St. Olaf, and St. Magnus to desist. King Ewen of the Isles' status as Monarch had been confirmed by Haakon IV and was disputed by Alexander. The episode might be emblematic of a broader desire on the part of Alexander to bring the Kingdom of the Isles fully into the power of the Scottish Crown. In any case, when he finally decided to continue in his endeavour, despite the dream, and having been advised against it by his men, he died shortly afterwards. The incident was portrayed in the saga as Divine punishment. His body was then transported back to the mainland and laid to rest at Melrose Abbey...

His son the 7 year old Alexander III would assume the throne soon after ..
He would be the last King of Scots from the ancient House of Dunkeld and essential the Houses last monarch.
While the young Maid Margaret is considered of the house Dunkeld she was never actually inaugurated as Queen of Scots...

THE TREATY OF PERTH....

On this day in 1266 The Treaty of Perth was signed bringing an end to the conflict between Scotland and Norway

The Treaty was agreed three years after the Battle of Largs in 1263. Michael Lynch has compared the treaty's importance with that of the Treaty of York of 1237. The Treaty of York defined a border between Scotland and England which is almost identical to the modern border.

In the treaty Norway recognised Scottish sovereignty over the disputed territories in return for a lump sum of 4,000 marks and an annuity of 100 marks
