The fortified island played a crucial role in the defense of Crete for centuries. Today, Spinalonga is a popular tourist attraction.
The ruins of the l***r colony, as well as the Venetian fortifications, attract thousands of visitors each year. The island has also been immortalized in literature, being the setting for the novel "The Island" by Victoria Hislop, which tells the story of a family affected by leprosy and their connection to Spinalonga.
