We got married in April and when we were thinking about our honeymoon, there was really only one place to go...Sri Lanka!

This is our 2nd trip to Sri Lanka, and our second trip with Beatroute Tours! In fact, it's our second tour with Shiran, the Beatroute chauffeur guide, so we knew that we would be well looked after! Shiran went above and beyond to ensure that we were able to experience as much as possible in his beautiful country. It is also clear that Shiran will do his very best to make things happen for his guests, and making the tour truly personalised and special.
On our first tour in 2019, we went to Sigiriya, Kandy, Galle and the South coast.

This time we travelled to the east coast, avoiding elephants crossing the roads! We revisited Dambulla and this time enjoyed the spectacular views from Pidurangala, which were amazing. We stayed at some fab hotels, including Heritance Kandalama and the amazing Jetwing Kaduruketha, where we ate our way through 4 course breakfasts and were treated like VIPs!

If you have ever thought of going to Sri Lanka, I would highly recommend you do, and I would also recommend you go with Beatroute because you will truly experience a tour personalised for you and with the aim of ensuring you have the best holiday and will probably be planning your next trip there when you get home!

Too hot to do much today but this evening, before dins we headed to the wonderful Kataragama Temple which was as spectacular as ever. We then had a hair raising ride home in the dark through the National Park and thankfully didn’t encounter any elephants 😂

Not gonna lie… we’ve been doing very little apart from sunbathing, eating and swimming whilst staying at Siyam Passikudah.

Today we had the absolute pleasure of spending time in the company of Daya, Nilanka’s childhood friend and Sri Lanka’s very own David Attenborough. We swam with shoals of beautiful tropical fish, turtles and reef sharks. Daya’s knowledge of all things wildlife but particularly the Ocean can not be underestimated and he featured in Episode seven of Blue Planet and can be seen swimming with whales having played a major role in supporting the BBC film crew and production team with his extensive knowledge. We could have listened to his stories for ever and it was particularly humbling listening to him talk about the human impact on the reef and the importance of protecting it 🥺

We have had the best three days at Jetwing Vil Uyana. Wildlife is in abundance and the hotel blends so seamlessly with the natural surroundings. We’ve spotted an otter, a crocodile, peacocks
and kingfishers, cat fish and insects galore. I had the most incredible massage of my life in the spa with Emmy. We nearly died walking the stairs to Dambulla caves in the morning heat but was so beautiful and tranquil when we got there. We’ve been helped by so many kind and wonderful people from the local fishermen who helped Hiru catch his own fish to the tuk tuk driver who lent us 5000 rupees when Nilanka forgot his wallet.

Packing up now as we head off to Trincomalee on the North East coast ❤️🇱🇰❤️

Finally got internet!! We have had the most wonderful week with family in Nuwara Eliya catching up after a ridiculously long time. We’ve eaten, drank and played ourselves silly and the cousins are the best of friends. Can’t believe we’ve not been back sooner and want you all to come and see why ❤️❤️❤️ We are now on a two week road trip and have just checked in to the wonderful Jetwing Vil Uyana .

We stopped at Kantale Tank to take some pictures of the magnificent lake and this lady approached us. She was selling Guava and chilli for 100 rupees a bag(approx.30p). She shared her story with us and we learnt that she hadn’t eaten that day and was desperately trying to raise enough money from her sales to be able to feed her sick husband. Whilst we have watched the impact of the economic crisis on the people of Sri Lanka from afar being here and witnessing people’s plights first hand is humbling and will leave a deep impact on us all. We gave her an additional 1300 rupees with the hope that she will feed herself alongside her husband and she was incredibly thankful. In perspective this amount of money would buy a portion of French fries in the hotels we have been staying in. I hope I always travel with curiosity and kindness and our children learn to do so too. It takes very little to do so ❤️❤️❤️

It’s been a real pleasure to organise the Honeymoon of our returning clients Sam and Acer. They are enjoying a fabulous two tour of the island, this time exploring the East coast beaches and temples. Acer’s grandfather was stationed in Trincomalee many years ago so it’s been a privilege to make his dream of visiting some really special sites ❤️

“Fiona and Nilanka from Beat Route organised our tour of Sri Lanka to suit our budget and our needs. We discussed everything in detail and the tour was arranged around us specifically. Nilanka is a Sri Lankan national and Fiona lived and worked in Sri Lanka for a number of years so their experience is second to none.
We had a private tour for the two of us with Shiran as driver/tour guide, Shiran was knowledgeable, friendly and very helpful. He was also totally flexible and happy to change the excursions if possible.
We stayed in some wonderful hotels and a highlight was? (the first one!) where they were very kind to me on a special birthday. From there we visited Sigiriya rock which looks daunting but please climb up it and you won't regret it. There ar plenty of stops and helping hands along the way and the views are wonderful.
Another highlight was The Temple of the Tooth at Kandy. We went in the evening for a service which was a very moving experience.
The train ride from Nuwara Eliya is a must and an experience and a half! You may well have a first class ticket but it's not like LNER. It's much more fun and the scenery and views are amazing.
The safaris at Cinnamon Wild were great and our "jungle chalet" was the most
luxrious chalet I've ever stayed in. Butlins it is not! sadly we didn't get to see the leopards but saw many other animals.
From there we went for 6 days R&R at Unawatuna in a lovely hotel on the beach. From there it's an easy ride to the ancient walled city of Galle.
Sri Lanka is an amazing country and it's people and friendly and helpful. Watch Good Karma Hospital for a a very basic idea of how lovely it is.
I cannot reccommend Beat Route tours highly enough. With Fiona and Nilanka you are in very safe hands and know that your holiday experience will be tailored to your specific needs.”
