Winter Tips Series!!!

With the temperature outside dropping and the night's getting ever shorter we want to winterise you for the months to come!

TOP TIP NUMBER 5: Hot juice or tea??

Replacing your regular water bottle with a flask of hot juice or sweet tea (other options are available!) will provide warmth to heat your core temperature when you drink it, plus a regular will potentially freeze up!

If you preheat your flask with boiling water, before you fill it up with a drink of your choice it will stay warmer for longer!

Winter Tips Series!!!

TOP TIP NUMBER 4: Know your map scales!

The landscape in winter cloaked in snow and thick with clouds is a very different one to summer. Fences and walls are hidden, streams are buried and small features vanish! Using a larger scale map (1:50k or 1:40k) allows you to focus on the largest features whilst navigating, however smaller scales (1:25k or even 1:10k) can be essential in steep terrain.

Printing small sections of map contained in a waterproof map case attached to you makes managing it much easier and removes the chance of it being blown away!

Carrying a GPS back-up is always advisable, but the cold is a battery killer!

With the temperature outside dropping and the night's getting ever shorter we want to winterise you for the months to come!

TOP TIP NUMBER 3: Reseal your waterproofs!

More often than not you will be travelling from a wet valley up through the freezing level and back again, if you get wet at the start of the day at best your body will be working very hard to keep you warm at worst you could succumb to hyperthermia!

Each jacket manufacturer has advice on the process of re-waterproofing your jacket and trousers!

TOP TIP NUMBER 2: Make a snack pack!

Stopping for regular breaks in winter when travelling in the hills or mountains is often not ideal, as it can cause your body temperature to drop when exposed to the elements.

A pre-prepared bag of your favourite sweet treats such as bite-sized pieces of chocolate, MM’s, dried mango and other snacks can be kept in a jacket pocket to keep you well supplied with sugar when you need it most! Also by keeping it near your body it stays soft and chewy!!

My personal favourite is dried mango and cashew nuts! 👌

Winter Tips Series!!!

With the temperature outside dropping and the night's getting ever shorter we want to winterise you for the months to come!

TOP TIP NUMBER 1: Carry a spare plastic bag in your rucksack!

Cold hands is never a fun experience and Shep's face says it all, as he battles hot aches! So, carrying multi-pairs of gloves or mittens is a must in damp and cold conditions!

No matter how waterproof your gloves say they are, they unfortunately have a big hole in them for your hands. Your gloves will likely get wet from rain, snow and sweat whilst you walk or climb. By carrying a spare plastic bag you can seal them up when you change gloves and they won’t saturate everything else in your rucksack.

A wet Monday!
At least we had good grit conditions over the weekend!

One of the courses this weekend was an Open Intro to Outdoor Climbing. Filled with a bunch of psyched indoor climbers from London, we gave them an experience of roped climbing before heading to more familiar territory and went bouldering. A strong bunch! There's now new friends made, Projects to return for and a taste for rock!

Evolution of Equipment - Cams 🧗🏼‍♀️

In the 70's there was a race to invent something that protected the rock face but also made it possible to climb utilising vertical and parallel sided cracks. Greg Lowe was the first to design a basic prototype of which Ray Jardine took a similar approach but made a lot of drastic improvements and towards the end of the 70's started selling them as "friends", one of which can be seen in the first picture. Although a very useful design these first ones were very heavy and quite stiff to use so over time the stem was altered to be flexible, addition bite points added and dual axel, meaning for a better range of movement when placed, lightweight and easier operation.
Now available in a range of sizes, cams are one of the most used and most common safety measure used in trad climbing. 🗻
