The Vale of Rheidol Railway opened to the general public on 22nd December 1902. At the time of building, it was one of the most up-to-date standard of narrow gauge constructionThe line was authorised as two distinct sections, namely the main line from Aberystwyth to Devil’s Bridge, and a harbour branch.
The original stations were at Aberystwyth, Llanbadarn, Capel Bangor, Nantyronen and Devil’s Bridge.
Ownership of the line passed to British Railways in 1948. It survived through threats of closure to become the last steam railway owned by British Rail until privatised in 1989.

Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway Co.Ltd is one of the oldest and longest narrow-gauge railways in England. It is locally known as ‘La’al Ratty’.
The line was built in 1873 and commercially opened in 1875 to transport iron ore from the mines. In 1876 it carried its first passengers; it was originally built to the narrow gauge of 3ft and was the first public narrow gauge railway in England.
