Did you know…..
The term "steeplechase" originated from a historic race in 1752. Cornelius O'Callaghan and Edmund Blake made a daring bet over dinner at Buttevant Castle in County Cork. Their challenge? To race from the steeple of Saint John's Church in Buttevant to that of Saint Mary's Church in Doneraile, covering a distance of approximately 4 miles.
This challenging course required the riders to navigate through open countryside, jump over fences, and cross rivers. The prize for this daring race was 600 gallons of port. Although history has not recorded who won, this event marked the beginning of steeplechase horse racing, laying the groundwork for what would become the Grand National.
