Travel is in our blood and the passion for holidays and exploring the world is as strong as it was back in 1936…The Broad family has been synonymous with travel since the late 1930’s when Alan’s father Ray Broad sold coach tickets in the back of his Father’s Ironmongers shop on Birmingham Road, Erdington. The company grew over the years to include Broads Travel Service, Tudor Travel and Concord Holidays. Following Ray’s retirement in the 1970’s, Alan’s eldest brother Robert opened Robert Broad Travel in 1982 in Mere Green, Sutton Coldfield. In 1985 Alan opened a Lichfield office on Boley Park where we are still located today. Robert sold off the Sutton Coldfield office when he retired in the 1990’s and Alan continued the family business with his son Oliver. Today, along with Nathan Collins our group of specialist travel brands falls under the name RB Collection. 🦓 Africa update...from our Resident Expert

Our winter months are the perfect time to visit South Africa, a personal favourite of ours. Nathan, Sam & Oliver have all visited on varying trips taking in Safaris, wineland drives and city visits to Cape Town and Johannesburg. We have also experienced the popular Rovos Rail, a great way to see the country. Here is our quick round up of developments in South Africa as well as Kenya and Uganda too...

Our update starts in South Africa with the opening of The Homestead in the Nambiti reserve. With only 12 suites across 23,000 acres of wilderness, the hotel will offer a very intimate luxury experience at this beautiful eco lodge.

One of our favourite combinations in South Africa is to spend a few days in Cape Town and then pick a car up to drive the Garden Route and Winelands. Oliver and Nathan have both enjoyed this and both agree it is one of the best self-drive experiences they have had. It is definitely up there with Route 1 in California, yet much better value for money without compromising on scenery or experiences.

After Cape Town and the Garden Route you can then enjoy a safari in the Kruger or maybe Saabi Sands area. There are many lodges to choose from and so we can help advise which is best for you.

This summer in Kenya we will see the much anticipated opening of Mara Tot Tree Camp. Dreamt up by Dereck and Beverly Joubert, this unique accommodation will allow just eight guests to slumber elevated in the canopy treehouse accommodation.

Gorilla and Chimpanzee safaris in Uganda have grown in popularity and we work with a number of ecotourism companies to ensure the very best experience for our clients but also that rules are adhered to and tourism respects the destinations aim to protect the wildlife. Kibale Lodge is opening this May on a 150 acre site with beautiful views of the Rwenzori Mountains, the Queen Elizabeth plains and the Kazinga channel. This location is perfect for chimpanzee trekking as Kibale park is home to a 1,500 stong chimp community. This small 8 room lodge also comes with a private villa, spa, sauna and pool.

Botswana welcomes two new accommodations this year; Mokete and Tawana both in the Okavanga Delta and both due to open early summer 2024. Mokete is a nine-tent 'limited edition' lodge that will only open for two years! Set in the Mababe wilderness area, it apparently has one of Africa's largest congregations of buffalo and elephants. Tawana safari lodge will open in the Moremi Game Reserve on the eastern side of the delta. Each of the eight rooms have their own plunge pools and outdoor living rooms overloooking the Gomito River. This is a game rich area known for high populations of lions and leopards to name a few!

🏝 Last-Minute Winter Escape Ideas

As the January Blues set in, here are some suggestions for last-minute getaways to warmer climates!

Our most popular destination has to be the Canary Islands as the flight is relatively short at around 4 hours and there are plenty of lovely luxury hotels to choose from. We know many of these well having visited ourselves, in particular away from the busier main resorts.

🇪🇸 In Tenerife, the Costa Adeje area is our favourite with the Bahia Del Duque and Mirador the top two hotels. Kayleigh recently discovered a new luxury property, set slightly back from the coast with excellent golfing opportunities too.

Depending which hotel you opt for, prices for hotels we recommend range from around £1,499 per person up to £3,499 pp with flights, luggage, seat reservations, airport security and VIP lounge, private resort transfers and ATOL protection for your financial security. We also have our own personal restaurant and things to do guide for this area as we know it well. This is based on departing towards the end of this month (Jan '24).

Gran Canaria is also a great option and we work closely with a few lovely hotels near the lighthouse in Maspalomas. There is a long boardwalk to stroll along (on the flat) and a nice selection of restaurants to choose from on your walk. If you prefer to eat in the hotels, one of them we have known for many years offers a great value half board upgrade and is well known for its excellent service, lovely gardens and great location.

A week here at the end of January starts from around £1,549 per person with all the same inclusions as above PLUS half board! If you usually visit Tenerife for your winter get away this is a great alternative, or if you like it a little quieter we cannot recommend it enough. We can also combine the beach with a stay at the Parador in the centre of the island and also in the historic part of the capital, Las Palmas. Read more about this combination on our blog.

If you don't mind flying up to 6-7 hours then your next option would be the Middle East. Dubai and Abu Dhabi continue to be popular however we also recommend the quieter Ras Al Khaimah as an alternative as Nathan found out when he took the family a few years ago. Only 1 hour north of Dubai, there are some great luxury hotel options and plenty to keep you busy without the intensity of its neighbour Dubai.

Oman is also popular with our clients. Muscat's luxury hotels are great, but we also suggest combining with the mountains or Salalah in the south- read more here.

Other destinations to consider for a winter getaway would be Madeira, Malta, Egypt Nile Cruise (very popular with our clients). Further afield, the Caribbean, Mauritius and Thailand.

✈️ A quick tour of the spacious ‘Qsuites’ in Business Class on a number of the refurbished @qatarairways flights. The centre twin seats retract to create a double bed which is great for couples and special occasion trips! 🎉 The layout isn’t for everyone with window seats alternating forward / backwards herringbone - something @british_airways were often criticised for as many prefer not to fly backwards 🤢 (BA are scrapping this in their planned refits). 👍🛫Overall they are very private with their own doors, however you’ll probably end up sampling one of the handful of Business Class style seats when flying via Doha as they don’t seem to have any obvious rules which routes / aircraft carry Qsuites and which don’t.
