Welcome to the Forth Valley Mountaineering Club (FVMC)

Our club is informal and sociable and has around 40 members. We are active in the Scottish and other mountains in all seasons, covering walking, climbing, scrambling, camping, biking and ski-touring. About the Club
We are one of the clubs based in Central Scotland, with members mostly from the Falkirk, Stirling, Linlithgow and West Lothian ar

eas - although a few live further afield in the UK and abroad. Our activities
The club organises Day Walks and Weekend Meets, with members also doing their own trips to the hills in between. The number and diversity of independently arranged trips are perhaps the greatest strength of FVMC. Mountaineering Scotland (MS) membership
As a member of the FVMC, you also become a member of MS, a benefit of which allows you to arrange individual hut accommodation for your own excursions. What are the benefits of joining a mountaineering club?
- shared experiences, knowledge, skills
- getting out with others more regularly
- access to club booked huts or bunkhouses
- access to booking huts for your own trips
- lower costs by pooling transport
- MS third party liability insurance
- joining trips abroad (walk, ski, climb, trek...) Why Join the FVMC?
- informal, friendly culture where everyone knows each other
- space enough on meets so that normally anyone can book onto future events
- relaxed enough so that everyone can do exactly what suits them in the hills
- established enough so that there's a huge bank of experience and advice to pick from
- big enough to have a complete programme of day walks and weekend meets

12/01/25 Day Walk: Cort ma Law and Lecket Hill – Campsie Fells In The Mist

The first official Day Walk (after our traditional New Year Walk on 02/01/25) was a short and cool affair on the Campsie Fells, north of Lennoxtown. Starting at the Campsie Glen waterfall car park and climbing the ridge to Lairs, then Cort-ma Law’s trig point, NS 65139 79959, then a snowy stomp north over to Lecket hill, NS 64460 81168, followed by a descent to the Crow Road, see; https://consumerplatform.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/route/24852859/250112--cort-ma-law-and-lecket-hill--lennoxtown?lat=56.004237&lon=-4.175182&zoom=14.8149&style=Leisure&type=2d¶ms=24852859¶ms=250112--cort-ma-law-and-lecket-hill--lennoxtown

06-07/12/24 Weekend Meet: Dalwhinnie Old School Hostel – Two Welcoming Fionas And A Standoffish Corbett

It was the first time that the club had stayed at the Dalwhinnie Old School Hostel, https://dalwhinniehostel.weebly.com/. It was very comfortable and an ideal location for winter days with not much daylight. The weather forecast for the Saturday looked terrible with 95% forecast heavy rain and high winds at Dalwhinnie, which gave some indication as to the conditions that might be experienced higher up. The forecast for the Sunday had less wind, rain and was to be sunnier.

15-16/11/24 FVMC Dinner Meet: Pitlochry Youth Hostel – Good Hill Days, Local Dinner and Homegrown Entertainment

The club had their Annual Dinner Meet at the Pitlochry Youth Hostel. Hired for the days of Friday and Saturday, the hostel provided an excellent weekend base for the nearby hills and proximity to local services. It also made a fine venue for their Saturday evening Slide Show, Quiz and Celidh, the latter of which was best described as a social gathering with instruments and song, minus the dancing.

09/11/24 Day Walk: Carn Mairg Circuit - Somewhere Beneath Their Feet

On Saturday 9th November a group of five went to do the Carn Mairg Cuircuit. Their route can be seen using; https://consumerplatform.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/route/24517715/241109--carn-mairg-circuit--glen-lyon?lat=56.623072&lon=-4.195574&zoom=12.9948&style=Leisure&type=2d.

This is a collection of four Munros making an excellent circuit when approached from Glen Lyon. There was the promise of fine scenery and good walking throughout. The area featured grassy rolling outlines with longer walks between the tops, surface geology of quartzose mica schist and quartz feldspar, with clipped grass, stretches of peat and heather, and occasional scree and boulder fields near the tops. Well established paths and fence posts lines provided straightforward navigation – which was just as well since for the vast majority of the 8:30hrs they spent covering 19.3km and 1371m of ascent they could see…NOTHING.

18-20/10/24 Weekend Meet: Strawberry Cottage for some, for others Badandun Hill!

The October weekend meet was set for Strawberry Cottage, Glen Affric, a location run by the An Teallach Mountaineering Club, https://www.anteallachmountaineeringclub.com/. The forecast looked grim, prompting 4 of the 6 intended participants to decide not to go but to do a short climb of Badandun Hill, NO 20772 67912, on the Sunday instead. However the remaining 2 members braved the weather at Glen Affric and managed to get out on the hills from their weather beaten cottage!

16-17/08/24 Weekend Meet: Muir Cottage, West of Braemar; Munros, Corbetts, Fionas…and Magical Walks.

The club spent a weekend at the Cairngorm Club’s hut, Muir Cottage, NO 076896, situated about 7-8km west of Braemar; https://www.cairngormclub.org.uk/muircottage/muircottage.htm. We have been there many times over the years and this occasion didn’t disappoint with many varied trips into The Gorms.

04/08/24 Day Walk: Beinn a Chreachen and Beinn Achaladair…Well That’s What It Says on The Map!

The month of August kicked off with three fellows, SP, BR & GM, tackling two Munros near Bridge of Orchy in wet, windy and ‘can't see a thing’ weather; two lumps, Beinn a Chreachen, NN 37392 44068, and Beinn Achaladair, NN 34602 43333. Their general route followed; https://consumerplatform.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/route/23511729/240804--beinn-a-chreachen-and-beinn-achaladair?lat=56.559478&lon=-4.722169&zoom=12.4059&style=Leisure&type=2d.

General July 2024 Activity: Fiona and Donald Find Horseshoes

With so many folk in the club having done their Munros we increasingly now venture into less visited places but with just as much enjoyment. The general activity this month saw ascents in Glen Artney and the Moorfoot Hills, featuring Fionas and Donalds.
