Have you visited the Hurler Stone Circles, near Minions on Bodmin Moor? It’s an incredibly atmospheric place to visit, especially when the fog rolls in!

This impressive this line of three early Bronze Age stone circles is an important part of a remarkable ‘ceremonial landscape’ of stone circles, stone rows, standing stones, cists and cairns.

Bronze Age sites like these are found all over Cornwall, especially on Bodmin Moor and in Penwith. Stone circles and standing stones are evidence partly of religious beliefs, possibly of an understanding of the rudiments of astronomy, especially the movements of the sun and moon, and certainly speak of an increasingly sophisticated and well-organised society that now, because of farming, had the time to devote to tasks that were not directly related to survival.

To the North East of the circles, on the ridge and visible from the site, lies the important Bronze Age burial chamber of Rillaton Barrow: so the Hurlers must not be seen in isolation. The numerous alignments apparent in this area, between man-made features such as the large barrows on Caradon Hill and natural landscape features such as tors, suggest that the Hurlers may have been part of an important processional route.

All the historic sites we care for are open to the general public and free to enter.

In our opinion, very little beats a view like this! When did you last visit the Hurler Stone Circles?

These Bronze Age stone circles are set in a prehistoric landscape of standing stones and barrows and are an incredible place to visit.

There are many theories about why people in the Bronze Age built stone circles like these. It is thought that most were probably multi-purpose tribal gathering places for ritual observances concerning the seasons and the fertility of the earth.

They are part of a remarkable ‘ceremonial landscape’ of stone circles, stone rows, standing stones, cists and cairns. The numerous alignments apparent in this area, between man-made features such as the large barrows on Caradon Hill and natural landscape features such as tors, suggest that the Hurlers may have been part of an important processional route.

Some archaeologists suggest that stone circles had astronomical observation purposes. As long ago as 1906 Norman Lockyer suggested that the stones at the Hurlers had special alignments with the sun, stars and other planets. Many stone circles do have “alignments” with things like the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunsets and with the position of the moon. Whether this helped Bronze Age people keep their farming calendar and timings correct, or whether it had something to do with the worship of the sun is something archaeologists have argued about for over 100 years.
