⛵️ Beneath Liverpool ONE, lies a fascinating slice of Liverpool's past—the Old Dock, once the heartbeat of the city’s bustling port!
⛵️ Opened in 1715, the Old Dock was the first commercial wet dock in the world, a ground breaking development that transformed Liverpool into one of the most important port cities globally. Ships from across the globe docked here, bringing goods, wealth, and new opportunities, marking a pivotal moment in the city’s history.
⛵️ The dock was used for nearly 150 years, supporting the booming trade of goods, coal, and timber, and helping fuel Liverpool’s industrial revolution. It was the lifeblood of Liverpool’s maritime industry, with warehouses and cranes lining its shores, and sailors unloading cargo from around the world.
⛵️ Over the years, as the city grew and the need for bigger docks emerged, the Old Dock eventually fell out of use. In the 19th century, it was covered over, and what remained of it was largely forgotten, buried beneath the streets of Liverpool. But, in recent years, excavations and archaeological work have uncovered the dock’s remarkable remains, revealing parts of its walls, stone paving, and even the original gateposts!
⛵️ Today, visitors to Liverpool ONE can catch a glimpse of this hidden history. The Old Dock is now part of National Museums Liverpool's interactive exhibits, offering a fascinating look into the city's maritime past.
⛵️ The next time you’re shopping or enjoying the sights at Liverpool ONE, remember that beneath your feet lies a historic dock that once welcomed ships from every corner of the globe. It’s a perfect blend of modern-day excitement and rich historical heritage, right under the heart of the city!
