Importation of Bait into Ireland

We've been getting a lot of questions about bringing bait into Ireland from the UK. Things have changed since Brexit and the following rules now apply:

To minimise the risk of accidental transmission of Foot and Mouth Disease and other infectious diseases, visitors are advised to use local sources in Ireland.

Anglers from Great Britain and other Third Countries: It is not possible to bring live baits (maggots, worms etc) in a personal capacity. All importation must be done in accordance with DAFM protocols: Import procedures for live invertebrates for fishing bait.

For non-live fishing bait (i.e. an Animal By-Product product), the permitted weight allowance per passenger is 2kg.

I hope that clears it up a little!

Ireland to open travel to UK from 19th July.

As it's possible to travel into Belfast from the UK - and because movement is allowed between the North and the South - it seems that it's also legally permitted to then travel into the Republic.

"Ireland does allow free movement across its open border with Northern Ireland, which Deputy Prime Minister Leo Varadkar acknowledged meant that someone could travel freely to Ireland from Britain via Belfast".

Ireland will adopt the European Union's COVID-19 certificate to help citizens to move more freely across the bloc from July 19 and broadly apply the same approach to arrivals from elsewhere, including the United States and Britain, it said on Friday.

Mr Varadkar said he will be making the case to fully restore the Common Travel Area between the two countries in the coming months to boost pub and restaurant trade for the beleaguered tourism industry

Keeping the fish company until you can all get back over here!

The deputy Irish Prime Minister said he will release information about international travel at the end of May with a view to having things up and running for the summer 🤞

I should have been on my annual 10 days fishing trip here with my mates Billy Delves and Frank Lythgoe, who come over from Warrington and St Helens, and have been enjoying a break with me for over 10 years, but with the present situation it was better to cancel and wait till next year
This catch was from Battlebridge, Leitrim on Monday. Only there for a few hours, but a pleasant location with the river and canal to choose from.

Dave Houghton testing the waters at Keshcarrigan Marina, Leitrim on Monday. Only fished for a couple of hours and had a fish a cast, mixed bunch with roach, hybrids and perch. Nothing big but very enjoyable to see that there was plenty there. A couple of guys arrived a little later and had good sport aswell. All locals at the moment, but keeping the fish interested for next year!

Taskers Angling in Liverpool is well known and anglers will hopefully still be looking forward for fresh maggots, casters and worm baits to be sure - as ever!.

All the keen anglers will be looking for a new season, which is just underway and staff members will most likely be among Cliff and Jimmy - stalwarts of the game.

Hopefully the company will go ahead, not only the tackle dealers, but regular customers who keep everyone happy.
“Active Irish Angling” is a long running company now, which used to be Leisure Angling about 14 years ago or more.

Perhaps you guys will note the fact that we also look after ferry travel and accommodations at a very reasonable holiday cost.
Come to Ireland
Maybe regular customers will take a break for a week by coming to Leitrim in a very popular area for coarse fishing?

County Cavan has been very popular with Ireland for many years.

Many of the high level angling events have largely moved from general coarse anglers to many whom are especially match men, looking for competitions of all sorts.

We are hoping that “Active Irish Angling” can enlighten the various possibilities for types of angling, whether it be a pike specialist or guy wishing for a net full of roach and bream, along with good quality.

More important of all, is the fact that in Ireland you are very welcome to arrive and no licences needed for general coarse angling. Active Irish Angling.

Keshcarrigan is a quaint village in County Leitrim, Ireland, on the Shannon-Erne Waterway, ideal for an experience for an overseas visit to the Leitrim. Fun Guaranteed!

Kesh is usually a “slow-mo” experience but the place usually becomes interestingly late in the afternoon and evening. Of course there’s a very popular pub and with plenty of chatter, that includes quietly reading the daily newspaper, being able to have a meal in the evening without costing a fortune and gaining another new pal – plus a net full of fish.

In a few weeks there will be five coarse anglers staying for 10 days in September and Keshcarrigan Lake will surely likely feature a change of scene for the guys this coming season.

Organised by “Active Irish Angling “who organised the whole event and information is available by contact Neal Houghton on 0044 151 528 9200

Active Irish Angling

We know that guys from St Helens are beginning to take a deal of interest. Lough Scur is midway between Carrick-on-Shannon and Ballinamore.

It is among the highest on the Shannon-Erne Waterway and very popular with local anglers, because sport is consistent from roach, hybrids and skimmers, to occasional decent nets of large bream.

Obviously there are travel costs on the ferry to Ireland but we can advise on at any time. The Rocks at Lough Scur in County Leitrim, Ireland, are often busy with regular fishing guys catching fish on the “Rocks” and similar venues too! However, there are lots more exciting venues across and enjoy.

Here is an ageing guy, trying to catch fish at Clancy’s Shore
“Active Irish Angling” remarked that is one of Leitrim’s forgotten angling venues, yet still capable of producing large nets of bream, hard fighting hybrids, tench and plenty of roach.
It is relatively small lake with limited bank space for four anglers and responds well to a spot of pre-baiting.
