On the outskirts of town, in the heart of Dinefwr Park, Newton House is a magnificent 17th-century mansion steeped in history, charm, and mystery. This grand estate, with its striking Gothic façade, offers a window into the past, reflecting the stories of generations who lived and loved within its walls.
The house was originally built in the 1660s, though the Dinefwr estateβs history stretches back over 2,000 years, once home to the powerful Welsh princes of Deheubarth. Newton House stands on land that has witnessed countless pivotal moments in Welsh history, from medieval warfare to the rise of the estate as a symbol of wealth and influence.
Owned by the Rhys family, descendants of Lord Rhys, it underwent several transformations over the centuries. Its most notable feature, the Gothic Revival architecture, was added in the mid-19th century, giving the house a hauntingly romantic air. The imposing turrets, grand windows, and sweeping views across the parkland and towards Bannau Brycheiniog beyond create a sense of timeless beauty.
But Newton House isnβt just known for its architectural grandeurβitβs said to be haunted! Visitors often speak of ghostly encounters, including the tragic story of Lady Elinor Cavendish, who is believed to roam the halls, seeking peace after a doomed love affair.
